Good afternoon Parents and Carers,

Please take time to read through the important information and key updates that are provided below in this fortnight’s newsletter. Given the current climate we seek your assistance in keeping us informed, and ask that you stay up to date with school communications.

Your cooperation and assistance with keeping our school safe is greatly appreciated, and thank you for working with us.

As we head into the weekend, stay safe and keep cool.

Communication to Families & Carers - COVID-19

In the event that the school needs to contact families and carers with information regarding confirmation of a positive case and/or likely close contacts you will receive a message via School Stream, followed by an email.

School Stream is the quickest and preferred method by which we can notify you.   Some families are yet to download School Stream, and we seek your cooperation in attending to this please.

Following on from the first message notification, further information and instructions from the school will then follow using a Department of Education template.

Please ensure that you are checking your emails regularly, and it’s essential that we have your current contact details on record.

Thank you for your cooperation.

Download School Stream today

School Stream is a centralised point of contact for news, events, absences, forms and more.

Please note that you can message the school direct using the "Messages" function of the app.

We ask for all parents and carers to please download the app by simply following these steps:

1. Go to the App Store or Google Play and download the App "School Stream".
2. Once downloaded, open the app and type the school's name into the search bar to load the school's profile.
3. Make sure you agree to Push Notifications when prompted.

Thank you for your support and cooperation.

If you need any assistance please call the School Office or drop by and we will be happy to assist.

Keeping Our School Safe

Thank you to everyone for your support and ongoing cooperation with following the current health protocols that are in place.

The following is provided for your information, and if you have any queries please don’t hesitate to contact the school via School Stream or info@yokineps.wa.edu.au

Late Arrivals & Pick Ups

We appreciate that there will be times when you are running late or last minute events impact on your regular routines, and please know we are here to help and provide assistance.

Over the past three weeks there have been several children arriving late each morning, and we seek your assistance in having your child at school before the bell at 8:50am.  In the afternoon please ensure children are collected promptly, and if you are running late please contact us and arrangements can be put in place.

At this early stage in the new school year it’s important that routines are in place and good habits established.

Staying In Touch

A strong, supportive home-school partnership is essential to your child’s success at school, and it is important to stay in touch with what is happening in your child’s classroom and inform staff of any changes to family routines or procedures.

As always, we encourage you to contact your child’s teacher should you have a query or require clarification in relation to a classroom matter or an aspect of your child’s learning program. Teachers are best placed to speak with you and should be your “first point of call” in relation to information or issues regarding your child’s educational program. Alternatively, it’s the school’s expectation that staff will regularly liaise with you in relation to your child’s learning and social development, and should the need arise you will be contacted to arrange a time to speak over the phone with you or arrange a meeting.

Your continued support, both now and throughout the year, in having children on time, prepared and ready for school each day is greatly appreciated.

Welcome from the Chaplain

Hi everyone!

My name is Rachel Kelly and I am the school Chaplain at YPS. My role here is to provide pastoral care and support to the school community. This can be in the form of 1-1 sessions with students and parents, running small group social/emotional programs and providing additional targeted support in classes as needed.

I can provide support in the areas of mental health, friendships, conflict management with peers, confidence-building, behaviour management, grief and loss, dealing with change and family breakdown. We all go through seasons where we might need an additional listening ear and a safe place to grow and challenge ourselves, and I aim to provide this to all in the school community.

I am a qualified Primary School teacher and also have counselling qualifications. I currently also work as the School Chaplain at Lockridge Primary School.

If you would like your child to have regular sessions with me, or to have someone to chat to as the need may arise, you can contact me directly at the school or speak to your child’s teacher or Emma King, Associate Principal. Parent permission is always sought before a formal 1-1 session or small group program. I am at Yokine on Mondays and Wednesdays. Please come and say hello and introduce yourself.

EdConnect Australia

Yokine Primary School has a long standing successful relationship with EdConnect Australia which trains school volunteers.

Yokine PS uses the talents of these volunteers to:
  • Help students within the classroom environment
  • Provide classroom support to teachers
  • Work with students in small groups
  • Assist in the school library, canteen, breakfast club or bike clubs
  • Help with school fundraising, sports carnivals and other events
  • Assist staff with minor school improvements
To date, this year, we welcome Debbie Povey (Wednesday, Room 5) and Hammad Sanaa (Monday, Room 10).

My name is Sanaa Hammad. It is pleasure to meet you all at Yokine Primary School, teachers, students and parents.

I taught for 10 years as a homeroom teacher in Kuwait.  I like teaching and interacting with children. I am currently studying a Bachelor of Counselling and Psychology at ECU and work as an educator at Early Learning services. I like to go for a walk, cook and socialise with people.

I wish you a wonderful peaceful year.

Sanaa

My name is Debbie Povey. I am 67 years of age, have a wonderful husband and am a granny to five grandchildren between the ages of 3 to 9. One lives in Perth, and one in Melbourne, who will soon be returning to Perth, and three living in Broome, a long way away, but a great place to visit.
I have a good sporting background and continue now playing lawn bowls at Mt Lawley Bowling Club where I am the Women’s Captain.

We have recently moved back to the area where I lived as child - I did all my primary school years at Yokine Primary.  The time I spent with each grandchild as they grew from babies to starting school, and helping with their early childhood development was very special to me.  As some of them now live so far away, and being retired with spare time on my hands, I decided it would be a great idea to return to the school I learnt at, to help other children with their learning.

WA PBS Update

Focus Behaviour for the fortnight is: Responsibility: We Maintain Good Hygiene

The aim of WA PBS at Yokine PS is to maintain a positive school climate and develop a consistent approach to teaching and responding to student behaviour.

Key Behaviour Expectations to demonstrate the Values of Respect, Responsibility and Resilience, form our Behaviour Matrix.  The locations where we expect to see these behaviours are in Learning Spaces, School Grounds, ICT, Events and Before and After School. Each of the Behaviour Expectations forms a WA PBS lesson, providing students, staff, and parents with a language and actions that is consistent across the school.

This fortnight, staff and students will be focusing on the expectation:  We maintain good hygiene.  Students will learn the importance of personal hygiene and how maintaining good hygiene shows responsibility for looking after their body and respect for others around them.

Take the time to discuss with your child about the fortnightly focus behaviours and keep an eye on the School Newsletter, DOJO and School Stream for updates. If you have any questions or queries about Positive Behaviour Support, feel free to get in touch with your child’s teacher, or contact a member of the WA PBS Team through the Front Office.

Special Delivery From the Perth Zoo

Yokine PS received a very special delivery from the Perth Zoo last week as Yoki, our WA PBS mascot arrived. Each class received their very own pick of the litter, and have him proudly on display. The pups look very cute in their dog coats, which highlight the school values of respect, responsibility and resilience.

Special thanks to Charlie and Cedric's Mum, Delphine, for making the wonderful coats..

Greetings from the Art Room!

Kaya, My name is Abi Callow and I'm the Visual Art teacher this year at Yokine. It has been wonderful to have so many passionate artists in my classes and I look forward to creating some magnificent artworks with your children this year.

This term all classes are studying native Western Australian animals and will be creating imaginative versions using a range of materials and techniques. I am also teaching students the names in Noongar for some of the animals, so please ask your children what a yonga, wetj, marli, koolbardi, and my favourite a djidi djidi is.

If you haven't yet sent your child in with an art shirt please do so as soon as possible to protect their clothes... this can be an old shirt made from thick material or an art smock. There are a few outstanding art scrapbooks and fine liner pens to come in from the booklist too, so please contact me if you have an issue providing these supplies.

Canteen Expression of Interest

Our canteen is an important part of our commitment to our school community, by providing healthy and affordable meals.  Whilst the facilities are not of a commercial standard, they are annually inspected and approved by the City of Stirling.

We are keen to explore new opportunities and are calling for Expressions of Interest.

If you are interested in working in a friendly student centred environment, providing morning tea and lunches for our students and staff, please contact us for more information on 9216 3350 or info@yokineps@education.wa.edu.au.

Voluntary Contributions

Please note that the $60 Voluntary Contribution is now payable.

The voluntary contributions made by parents and caregivers are essential to the School’s ability to deliver a transformative learning experience for your child. Your voluntary contributions will enable us to extend our capacity to add value to the learning experiences of our students. With the extra funds we are able to build on our literacy and numeracy programs, sports, arts and music programs and equipment.

The school office accepts Credit Cards and PayPass payments for all school accounts or the contributions can be paid through the QKR! app or by direct bank transfer.

Phys. Ed. in Kindy

Physical Education lessons have arrived in the Kindy classes much to the excitement of the Kindy students. The House Captains set up the equipment on Wednesday mornings and at 9:00am the Fundamental Movement skills begin.

Both Kindy classes have been jumping, hopping, skipping and running into, on and out of hoola hoops and other sporting equipment.

Lots of fun has been had while learning new skills.

After Hours Visitors to School Grounds - School Watch

It doesn’t happen very often, but on occasion we do experience some unwanted visitors after hours.  Thank you to our local families and community members for keeping us informed and reporting any unusual activity at the school.

School Watch is a partnership between the WA Police and the Department of Education aimed at protecting public schools from vandalism, theft and damage. When you contact School Watch Security, Department security officers can quickly attend schools in the metropolitan area. The Police will attend if called.

If you live near a public school and see or hear suspicious behaviour immediately contact School Watch Security or the Police 131 444.

Traffic Wardens 2022

We have been advised by the Children's Crossing Unit of the WA Police that there is a current shortage of Traffic Wardens to operate school crossings, due to many retiring at the end of 2021.

Given the current circumstances with Covid-19, vaccinations and the demographics of our Traffic Wardens, there has not been as much interest in becoming a Traffic Warden this year. This being the case, quite a few crossings are currently unattended.

If any Parents/Grandparents are interested in becoming a Traffic Warden please contact the Children’s Crossings Unit direct on 6274 8731 and an application pack will be sent out. The current pay rate is around $25.58 per hour - two hours per day for five days per week.

We are a "Nut Aware" School

Please be aware that some of our students have a SEVERE allergic reaction to peanuts / nuts and peanut / nut products.

It would be appreciated if you could ensure that food brought to school for play-time and lunch does not contain any peanuts or peanut / nut products.

Children are not encouraged to share or "swap" food that has been packed for them from home.  Thank you for your co-operation.
