Acknowledgement of Country

We would like to acknowledge the Wadawurrung People, who are the Traditional Custodians of the land on which we come to learn.
We thank them and their ancestors for looking after this land for thousands of years, and for their kindness and courage in sharing it with us in the present.

From the Principal

We are certainly gaining momentum at Newington Primary School with lots of wonderful things taking place inside and outside the classrooms over the last two weeks. We have seen students enjoying the Soccer clinics yesterday with more classes having the same opportunity in the coming week. As I wander around classrooms students are engaged and settled making the most of their learning time. I have observed students reading independently from Foundation through to Year Six while in other classes students are reminding themselves about the importance of the learning pit and having a growth mindset.

Classes called for “Student Voice” nominations last week and students who were interested presented to their class a short speech on why they would like to be part of this important school team. Mrs Delahunty and Lucy later met with the 2022 Student Voice team to share ideas on how the team can best represent the Newington Primary School students moving forward. Their first little project is going to be to sell the chicken’s eggs on a Friday afternoon. You will find them set up outside the double gate at pick up time selling the eggs at a half dozen for $2.00, with all proceeds going back into the Kitchen Garden Program.

Assemblies

Last week I had the pleasure of attending my first 5/6 assembly. Congratulations to the school captains of 2022, Raghav, Jaxon, Harper and Bethany on the wonderful way they hosted their first assembly. Students from each class presented their classes essential agreement, really setting the expectations of the year ahead for learning in each class.

At the moment due to COVID restrictions we will not be having whole school assemblies in person. Each team (F-2, 3-4 and 5-6) will hold their own assemblies throughout the term. I am very much looking forward to attending the 3-4 assembly on Wednesday next week.

Please note that next Wednesday March 2nd we will be holding a virtual whole school assembly so we can present the leadership badges to this year’s student leadership team. A link to this event and further information will be placed on Seesaw in the coming week for families to use as access to the event. Each class will also be logging into the link so they can be part of this special assembly too.

Tutoring Initiative

The Tutoring Initiative is going to continue in 2022, which is a fabulous opportunity for many students. The initiative has been designed to support students following 2 years of disruptive learning during COVID. The Tutoring program at Newington will support the work of the teacher’s in the classroom by focusing on areas that students need extra support in. At the moment we are finalising the students who will be involved in this initiative. You will be contacted by our Tutors if your child is going to be part of the program. This term Karla Devlin and Nicole Considine are the teachers leading this initiative.

Breakfast Club

Newington Primary School is lucky to have the Breakfast club run each day before school from 8:15am. Any children are welcome to join the Breakfast Club and are asked to bring a gold coin donation please. It is important that students are not dropped off to the school prior to 8:15am for their own safety. Staff are not able to supervise students at this time.

Before and After School

If a child is needing to be at school prior to 8:35am and they are not attending the breakfast club then they should be booked into Before School Care. This is also the case for students who are not able to be collected by 3:10pm each day. The YMCA is situated in the Multipurpose room and they welcome families to drop by there and inquire about their service.

Sports Day

Heather Delahunty is currently putting together a fantastic Sports Day program and has the St Patricks students coming across to assist on the day as well. At the moment we are still waiting guidance on whether Parents are able to attend the Sports Day. As soon as we have guidance on any COIVD restrictions to do with Sports Day we will inform the school community immediately via Seesaw and Facebook.

COVID Update

A big thank you to the families who are continuing to do their R.A.T testing twice each week. This is really helping us in detecting positive cases quickly and keeping the rest of the community safe. This is process is going to be continuing for the rest of the term at this stage. Please contact the office at any stage you run out and need another box.

As you have seen in the daily updates we have got multiple cases within the school community. The staff are doing a terrific job at keeping their classrooms as safe as possible by keeping them well ventilated, students sanitising and wearing masks and wiping down surfaces regularly. We are hoping to get more clarification on the new guidelines around schools in relation to COVID in the coming days. I will communicate any new changes to families via the daily update if there are any.

Please remember to report any positive results to the school as soon as you can to the office by phone or email. These are the cases we then alert the community to each day between 3:30-4:00pm.

Seesaw

Seesaw will continue to be a form of communication with our families this year. All families and students are signed up to their 2022 classes. Teachers are happy to communicate with families when needed on this platform but please be aware that our staff will only be responding to messages and posts between 8am-6pm Monday to Friday. Please note that if you do have concerns or questions, phones calls to the office or email are often the best way to communicate directly with staff.

School Council

The first School Council meeting for the year took place on February 14th. It was lovely to meet the 2021 School Council members via WebEx and I look forward to working with the Newington School Council moving forward. We are now looking for members for the 2022 School Council as we have a few new vacancies. In coming days please find information on Seesaw regarding nominations for those interested in joining School Council. Nomination forms will also be available at the office for interested parties to collect and drop back in.

Junior Unit

A very busy start to the year has seen our Foundation students already reach 10 days of learning! We have been trying our best to get into the routine of school, make new friends and of course, have fun! We are especially looking forward to next week, where we will start our weather inquiry, exploring the central idea 'Seasonal changes affect everyday life'.

Our Year Ones have made a great start to our Home Reading program, reading at home regularly and recording this in their school diary. We have been learning and using new strategies that help us feel calm and ready for learning. Our 'Calming Toolbox' now includes a calming bag made by each student, breathing techniques and mindfulness drawing. Our Word of the Day is helping us to build some impressive vocabulary…expect to hear about our 'tranquil' and 'serene' classes that are sometimes 'flabbergasted'!

Grade 2 students have been busy identifying our personal strengths and focusing on building friendships. We have started to explore celebrations around the world and the students have started to create their own 'Celebrations around the World' booklets. The Grade 2s are very excited for this year as we are the lucky ones to celebrate the number 2 in making history as Grade 2's 2sday on Tuesday 22/2/22.

The Junior Unit students are certainly looking forward to our House Sports next Friday, March 4th. Running, jumping throwing will bring smiles to everyone's faces and we hope to be able to invite parents back into the school community, to cheer on their mini superstars. Please keep an eye out for information on this! Please pack a drink bottle and appropriate food for the day.

Middle Unit

The Grade 3’s have been working hard on developing their self-management skills over the past 3 weeks, and the teachers are very pleased with the progress their students are making. This week, we will begin our new unit of inquiry, How We Express Ourselves. Students will be looking into how creativity can be represented in many ways. We hope to get the 3D printer out and use it to express our creativity.

In Grade 4, we have begun to inquire into our next unit, Sharing the Planet. Over the next 6 weeks, we will research and learn about different climate zones and how living things can adapt to different conditions. Students will be using their thinking skills to analyse the unique features of climate zones and will look for similarities and differences. They will also be using their self-management skills to demonstrate how they can persevere and keep on track during research tasks. We look forward to seeing what students discover!

Senior Unit

In Grade 5 we have started exploring the way ‘Sustainable choices will shape the future’. To launch this inquiry, we conducted a debate around the impact plastic used in gaming technology has on the environment. Later in the week we will look at different forms of energy and how circuits are created, as well as examining the techniques we can use to write persuasively. On Tuesday, our Grade 5s were lucky enough to participate in a Maths Zoom hosted by Monash Tech School where we explored the mathematics behind card magic.

In Grade 6 students have been busy learning more about Iqbal Masih. Through our class novel, Iqbal, students have been learning about the conditions in which he lived and worked and the impact he had on thousands of children's lives by fighting for children's rights. Students have also begun to finish off their Unit on Negative Integers, square and cubed numbers as well as BODMAS. We are excited to start learning about the differences between editing and proofreading and the importance of both to the writing process.

Art

Our students have invested a great deal of time planning out their native endangered species artwork. The Begonia Festival are trying to raise awareness and our school community has taken on this challenge excitedly. Using recycled materials our 3, 4, 5 and 6 students are in the midst of creating their own papier-mâché and steam punk inspired animals. Our wonderful junior unit is assisting in the setting up on the different habitats, I cannot wait to share with you their accomplishments. We also welcome Bryce and Charlotte our official ART Captains, we have discussed some wonderful initiatives that will take place. Look out for their photo in the next newsletter!

Japanese

Minasan konnichiwa! (Hello everyone!)

Foundation news: There has been a great deal of excitement and enthusiasm about Japanese culture and language from our youngest students. They have learnt how to say hello, their name, and some basic counting. Next week, we will count to 10 in Japanese. Gambatte! (Do your best!)

Japanese Club: Students from Grades F-6 have had the opportunity to enjoy a range of activities run by the Japanese captains, including origami, manga drawing. Japanese club is held at lunchtime in the Japanese room.

Show and Tell: Does your child own something Japanese? Eaten Japanese food at a restaurant? Have a Japanese related story to share? Learning a Japanese martial art such as Judo or karate? Students are encouraged to show and share each lesson. Maxx and Logan dressed up as Luigi and Mario this week!

The Sustainable Gardening Kitchen

LOOK OUT!

Our vegetable garden and chicken/duck pen is having a makeover.

At the start of week six you should notice some wonderful additions and changes to these areas. This is made possible thanks to the donations raised at our Bunnings Sausage Sizzle and Sausage Sizzle Lunch Order Day last year. A huge thank you to everybody!

We also welcome Tully and Will, our official SGK Captains, we have discussed some wonderful initiatives that will take place. Look out for their photo in the next newsletter!

Music

Music Clubs are off to a flying start. While not being able to have mixed year level clubs inside, we have taken advantage of the beautiful weather and conducted music clubs outside. Junior Music club has been “shaking it up” to a range of songs chosen by the students, in the shade of the big tree on the oval, with our home made Agi-Pipe Shakers.  Here is a photo of us making our way back to the music room “parade-style”, lead by Eleanor from Grade 2A, to Diamonds by Rhianna. These instruments also make amazing fashion accessories when worn on top of your hat!
