Join us at the Environmental Film Festival Australia
Wednesday 17, Thursday 18, Friday 19 October, Westgarth Cinema, High Street, Northcote
Darebin Council is proudly partnering with the Environmental Film Festival Australia to host 3 feature length films at the Westgarth Cinema in Northcote. The Festival, now in its eighth year, will entertain while educating, and features films covering all environmental issues.
This new partnership is an exciting opportunity for Council to engage our community in conversation around important environmental issues like the climate emergency and the need to value, protect and conserve our natural heritage areas.
• LIVING THE CHANGE: INSPIRING STORIES FOR A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE | Wednesday 17 October, 6:45pm
Living the Change sets out to inspire every person to make a difference by using their social networks and communities. From forest gardens and composting toilets, to community-supported agriculture and time-banking, this film presents a plethora of ingenious yet practical ways to rethink our approach to how we live, and how to be the change we want to see in the world.
Filmmaker Jordan Osmond will be present for a Q&A after the screening.
• STELLA POLARIS ULLORIARSUAQ | Thursday 18 October, 6:45pm
The Kalaallit people of Greenland have been inseparably connected to the eternal ice for millennia. But in just a few short years, colonialism has put pressure on this culture to accept a more “modern” lifestyle. Today, as the foundation of their traditions is literally melting beneath their feet, documentarian Yatri N. Niehaus sets out with a team of two photographers to capture images of a sadly vanishing world.
This session will be followed by a panel discussion.
• BIRD OF PREY | Friday 19 October, 6:30pm – Closing night film
In 1977, world-renowned cinematographer Neil Rettig captured the first filmed images of the Philippine Eagle in the wild, transforming the bird into a national symbol. Native to and found only in the Philippines, this majestic creature is at once the world’s largest and rarest eagle. Shockingly, less than 700 remain today, and the future of these iconic birds is tied to the preservation of the Philippine’s last fragments of old-growth forest. Together, we will witness their fight to save this beautiful species from extinction.
This session will include the screening of Council’s short natural heritage film which showcases some of Darebin’s most significant and beautiful natural heritage areas; and demonstrates the commitment of many in our community to valuing, protecting and conserving these areas. This session will also be followed by a panel discussion.

Waterwatch Quality Training
Friday 9 November 2018, 10.00am-3.30pm
Darebin Parklands Environment Centre, end of Separation Street, Alphington
Do you love walking along the Merri, Edgars or Darebin Creeks and find these green corridors an oasis from the hustle and bustle? Why not give back to our creeks and help monitor the health of our waterways by becoming a Waterwatch citizen scientist!
Merri Creek Management Committee and Waterwatch are hosting a free training session for new Waterwatch volunteers in November.
By becoming a Waterwatch volunteer you’ll learn how to collect water quality data, conduct habitat assessments and identify aquatic macroinvertebrates (water bugs). Long-term data from this program assists with monitoring waterway health and helps identify problems in our creeks.
Never collected water quality data before? No worries! No previous experience is needed to become a Waterwatch volunteer and you will be provided with all the necessary monitoring equipment, technical support and advice along the way. You’ll also be connected with existing Waterwatch groups so you can put your new skills to use by conducting regular water quality assessments with fellow Waterwatch volunteers.
This is a free training workshop, but bookings are essential.
Lunch is provided so please let us know any dietary requirements when booking.
This workshop is supported by the City of Darebin, Moreland City Council, Yarra City Council and City of Whittlesea. For more information email: JuliaCirillo@mcmc.org.au
