Say no to single-use plastics for a day, a week or a whole month.
It's shocking to know that every single bit of plastic that has ever been made still exists somewhere in the world. Approximately eight million tonnes of plastic waste ends up in freshwater and marine environments each year, polluting water and harming wildlife.
Plastic Free July aims to raise awareness of our growing plastic waste problem, and challenges people to do something about it.
Get motivated and register for the challenge with your friends, family and colleagues. If you’re stuck for ideas about how to eliminate your plastic use, visit Living Plastic Free or follow Council’s social media for useful tips and facts through July.
Visit www.darebin.vic.gov.au/plasticfree to find out more about Council's commitment to reducing single-use plastic.

Join us to find out what’s driving this change. Come along to a free screening of the award-winning short film 'E-wasteland' - a visual portrait of unregulated e-waste recycling in Ghana. Following each screening there will be a Q&A with the film’s director David Fedele, a local independent filmmaker. Light snacks will be provided at both events.

Connecting neighbours through composting
Have you heard of a community composting hub? Preston resident Katrina Forstner has been running a composting hub from her backyard since mid-2018. Each week, local residents drop off their kitchen scraps and coffee grounds to contribute to her five large compost bins and one worm farm. With support from Darebin City Council and through the ShareWaste app, Katrina has expanded her composting hub and connected with more neighbours who want to donate their food scraps so they can be turned into compost.
The hub brings the local community together and provides an opportunity for apartment dwellers and those who do not have the ability to compost themselves to recycle their organic waste. In the last year, the hub has accepted 262 donations from over 20 households and diverted more than 1.5 tonnes of kitchen scraps from landfill, avoiding almost 3 tonnes of carbon emissions as a result.
Read more about Katrina’s composting hub and find out how to be a ShareWaste host or donor.
