Funding opportunity for local biodiversity projects
Darebin Council is offering funding to support biodiversity initiatives delivered by local community groups.
The funding is designed to support biodiversity and natural heritage projects in urban settings. Projects may include (but are not limited to) revegetation and increasing vegetation projects; designing and implementing innovative citizen science projects; and innovative biodiversity and natural heritage education programs for children, young people or adults. Projects may also include actions to create social inclusion or support under-represented communities.
The Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP), has delivered the funding as part of the Caring for Our Local Environments (COLE) Initiative.
Applications open on Monday 19 August 2019 and close Friday 13 September 2019. The successful projects are to be completed between October 2019 and May 2020.

Recycling update
We are disappointed to let our community know that Darebin's recycling service provider, SKM Recycling, is currently not accepting recyclables.
The collection of household recycling bins in Darebin will continue as normal during this time. Alternatives are being explored but without the capacity to store materials, the short term solution is to divert these collections to landfill.
Our website and Facebook page will be regularly updated to alert residents of any changes. Please share this message with your family, friends and neighbours who also live in Darebin.
As we work on a solution, we ask residents to consider the following:
- Reduce your waste. Consider how you can minimise waste - be mindful of what you buy and whether you're purchasing unnecessary packaging. Visit our website to find out how you can recycle right and reduce your waste.
- Squeeze, squash and flatten your recycling to fit more in your bin, and take your bin out only when it is full.
- Drop off your recyclables at the Darebin Resource Recovery Centre. Your sorted recycling is accepted free of charge at the gate (domestic quantities). Fees apply at the gate for your general waste, green waste, timber waste, building materials and other items. View the accepted items and charges on our website.
You can also sign and share this petition, and join Darebin City Council in calling on the Victorian Government to take urgent action to find a solution to the recycling crisis.

Ride2Work Day – get your workplace on board
Darebin workplaces are encouraged to host a breakfast or morning tea to celebrate National Ride2Work Day on Wednesday 16 October. Those who register their event with darebinlovesbikes@darebin.vic.gov.au before Monday 30 September will receive Darebin Loves Bikes reflective anklebands and go in the draw for a Bike N Blend tandem smoothie bike package.
Ready, set, ride!
Now it’s easier than ever to ride around Darebin with access to three new bike repair stations at Darebin Parklands, Preston Library, and Northcote Aquatic and Recreation Centre. Find out how to use the new pumps and repair equipment and take advantage of a free 10-minute bike check at three special launch events in September and October. It’s the perfect opportunity to get your bike ready to ride to work, the gym, the library and the park this spring.

Food waste recycling is coming to Darebin!
Do you have a green waste bin for your garden waste? From October 2019 your existing green waste bin will be a food and green waste bin!
That’s right - food waste recycling is about to land in Darebin, and we’re excited for residents to take part.
Residents with a green waste bin will receive an information pack in their letter box with all the information they need to recycle their food waste, including what can and can't go in your bin to be recycled.
We’re also here to help you avoid food waste in the first place. We’re encouraging all residents to sign up and take part in the Food Know How program. The program is designed to help you plan, shop, cook and store your food to make the most out of your groceries and help you save money.

Octopus Schools Round 3 applications now open.
Darebin Council is once again offering the chance for one local primary school to participate in our Octopus Schools Program. The program aims to create a safe school precinct that encourages students and families to choose active modes of transport such as walking, cycling and scooting.
The school selected for this year’s program will receive over $150,000 investment in the school precinct, which includes up to $50,000 to support active travel programs in the 2019/20 financial year.
In previous years, successful applicants have benefited from safe travel improvements to their schools including new raised school crossings, bike sheds, bike fleets, and improved bike and pedestrian routes.

A new discrimination reporting tool for the Darebin community.
Darebin Council has partnered with the Victorian Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission to make it easier to report discrimination when it happens to you or someone you know. The Commission is an independent agency and part of its role is to receive and resolve complaints from the community.
A quick, confidential report can be made using the new Community Reporting Tool (CRT) on Council’s website. The tool asks you four questions with the option of being contacted by the Commission if you wish.
Even if you’re not sure whether what happened to you is discrimination, making a report to the Commission can help.

All Nations Kitchen Garden free winter pruning workshop
9am on Saturday 24 August 2019
All Nations Park, Northcote (off Separation Street)
The All Nations Kitchen Garden is a multi-layered garden of fruit trees, edible understory and ground cover located in All Nations Park, Northcote.
A group of local residents care for and manage the site in partnership with Council. The goal is to sustainably produce local food and to provide opportunities for education and community building.
You are invited to a free fruit tree pruning workshop at the All Nations Kitchen Garden on Saturday 24 August at 9am. Bring your pruning questions and learn how to correctly prune your fruit trees in this practical demonstration.
Everyone is welcome to join the group for their regular community gardening days on the first Saturday of each month, from 10am
