Funding opportunity for local biodiversity projects
Darebin Council is offering funding to support biodiversity initiatives delivered by local community groups.
The grants are designed to support biodiversity and natural heritage projects in urban settings. Projects may include (but are not limited to) revegetation and increasing vegetation projects; designing and implementing innovative citizen science projects; and innovative biodiversity and natural heritage education programs for children, young people or adults. Projects may also include actions to create social inclusion or support under-represented communities.
The Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP), has delivered the funding as part of the Caring for Our Local Environments (COLE) Initiative.
Applications for Darebin's Biodiversity Initiative Grants opened on Monday 26 August and are closing on Monday 16 September. The successful projects are to be completed between October 2019 and May 2020.

Food waste recycling is coming to your green bin on 7 October
From 7 October 2019 residents will be able to recycle food waste, including fruit and vegetable scraps, meat and bones, bread, cheese and even leftovers, as part of their existing green waste bin service.
Food and garden waste from this bin will be transformed into compost, to be used on farms and gardens across Victoria. Check out The Back to Earth Initiative for some fantastic farmer stories and to see what happens to your green waste.
Residents with a green waste bin service will be notified of the change by mail – so keep an eye on your letterbox for your information pack and handy fridge magnet and remember, no plastic of any kind can go into your food and green waste bin. Plastic bags don’t break down, even if they’re compostable, so make sure all food and green waste go in the bin loosely.

Just Eat it - Food Waste Recycling launch
Join Darebin Council and a guest Councillor in the launch of Darebin’s food waste recycling service with a FREE screening of ‘Just eat it: a food waste story’ on Thursday 3 October.
Just Eat It is a delicious documentary film about food waste and food rescue. It follows couple Jen and Grant as they dive into the issue of waste from farm, through retail and all the way back to their fridge.
Following the screening, attendees will have the chance to pose questions about our community’s journey to reduce food waste and see displays of the compost product your food and green waste is transformed into.
The screening will be held at Preston Shire Hall from 6.30-8.30pm. Tickets are essential and must be booked in advance. Book your place now via Eventbrite here.

Streets for People – Seeking feedback on the Northern Reservoir Corridor
Darebin’s Streets for People Project is all about making our streets safe and inviting for those who live, work, play and study here.
We have been working on the Northern Reservoir Corridor in recent months.
In the first round of community engagement we asked for feedback on local issues and opportunities. The second round of consultation presented the draft concept, which include community input from round 1.
Council has now developed a final set of draft concept plans for the Northern Reservoir Corridor. The concept plans show the proposed road safety and streetscape improvements. We invite community members to provide feedback on the final review. Please follow the links below.
Northern Reservoir Corridor feedback opportunity is open from Tuesday 3rd September to Friday 20th September, 2019 at https://www.yoursaydarebin.com.au/northernreservoircorridor.

If there’s something strange in the environment…..
Who you gonna call?
Bushland!
Bushland crews are out every day in your neighbourhood, protecting and enhancing Darebin’s Natural Heritage and environments.
The Bushland Management Department are very happy to announce that they have introduced electric powered machinery. These machines will help the team tackle weed invasions and other threats to biodiversity in more sustainable ways.
After years of using petrol powered machinery, this is another progressive step for Darebin City Council in reducing carbon emissions.
They ain’t afraid of no weeds.
