Reservoir Views Primary School is Darebin’s Octopus School for 2019/20
Reservoir Views Primary School has been selected as the Darebin Octopus School for 2019/20. Thank you to all the schools that applied and congratulations to Reservoir Views PS!
The Octopus School program engages students in active travel to and from school by reducing barriers to active travel such as congestion around the school.
In 2017 Reservoir West Primary School was chosen as Darebin’s pilot Octopus School. We are thrilled to announce that the final works are now complete and the program has been a great success. A bike fleet and shed has encouraged more riders, active travel routes have been mapped, and safety improvements for cycling and walking have been implemented.
The school has experienced a steady increase in children riding, walking and scooting to school. And the teachers and parents are continuing to encourage and advocate for safe active travel for all students. Well done indeed Reservoir West PS, and keep up the amazing work!
We look forward to some wonderful stories of active travel from students at Reservoir Views in the near future.

How do you recycle your food scraps?
Maybe you use a compost bin, or a Bokashi, perhaps it’s ShareWaste in your household or maybe you use Council’s new food and green waste bin?
We’ve had such a great response since we launched the food waste recycling service and we want to know how many food waste champions are out there. If you’re a food waste champion - take the food waste recycling pledge and quiz and be in the draw to win a $50 voucher.
Local resident Fiona is a food waste champion. She’s been using her food and green waste bin since our Kingsbury trial and comments: “It’s been unbelievably easy – I literally put any of the food scraps and any of the leftovers that my children don’t want to eat in the ice cream container, which I keep in the fridge in the summer. My daughters bring it out and put in the green waste bin, and it’s done”.
To find out more about this service and other food waste recycling options, including frequently asked questions, or to see if you’re eligible to apply for a food and green waste recycling bin for your household, visit www.darebin.vic.gov.au/foodwaste

The Vic Bag Ban starts today - 1 November 2019
To help combat plastic pollution, the Victorian Government is implementing a state-wide ban on lightweight plastic bags from 1 November 2019.
The ban applies to all retailers, including supermarkets, take-away shops, markets, and many more, meaning it is best to bring your own reusable bag with you when you go shopping.
Victorians are already doing a great job building better bag habits. On average three quarters of Victorians bring their reusable bags with them when shopping for food, and other items, like clothes and shoes. Here are our top tips to making reusable bags an essential in your day:
- Before you leave home remember: bag, wallet, keys and phone
- Keep your bags at the front door, in your desk at work or in the car so they’re nearby
- Keep a foldable bag with you throughout the day in your handbag or backpack
- Take a bag or container at lunchtime when purchasing food from the market or cafes

Delivering a greener future for Darebin
Darebin is a great place to live and open space is central to our health and wellbeing. As the city grows, and housing density increases, an increased open space levy will help deliver a future city with more and better green open space.
In September, Council adopted Breathing Space: The Darebin Open Space Strategy. A key action from the strategy is to increase the open space levy. The open space levy applies when land is subdivided to create two or more additional lots.
From 14 November until 16 December 2019, you can review the amendment documents and make submissions on the proposed increase to the open space levy.
For more information, come along to the following drop-in sessions:
Tuesday 26 November, Northcote Town Hall, 5.30pm to 7.30pm
Tuesday 3 December, Preston City Hall 5.30pm to 7.30pm
For more information see www.darebin.vic.gov.au/c186dare
If you have any questions about the proposed planning scheme amendment, please contact Amy O’Keeffe on 8470 8698 or email planningservices@darebin.vic.gov.au
