Support for frontier research: the 2023 HFSP Research Grants

HFSPO announced today some USD 41M to support 34 new Research Grants

The International Human Frontier Science Program Organization (HFSPO) announced today some USD 41M to support the top 6% of the HFSP research grant applicants over the coming 3 years involving 107 principal investigators in 24 countries. The 34 winning teams in the 2023 competition for research grants went through a rigorous year-long selection process in a global competition that started with 589 submitted letters of intent involving scientists with their laboratories in more than 50 different countries. This year, 9 Research Grants - Early Career and 25 Research Grants - Program were selected for funding.

HFSP’s collaborative research grants are given for a broad range of projects under the umbrella theme “Complex mechanisms of living organisms”. The program supports cutting-edge, risky projects and it is the only program that enables true global collaboration among international teams of scientists with laboratories in different countries.

HFSP Program Grants appeal to the innovative and creative potential of the research teams. Frontier life science knows no limits as winning teams propose to investigate, for example, how to tap into a cell’s energy grid, the electric fields that are at the center of enzyme catalysis or bridging robotics and pollination.

HFSP Early Career Grants are for applicants within 5 years of establishing their independent research group and no more than 10 years from their doctoral degree. This group of investigators also proposes intriguing concepts such as the atmosphere as a living breathing ecosystem, or hydrodynamic motion cues in fish and also to study the responses of organisms to novel environments.

The 2023 HFSP investigators display remarkable depth in approach and innovative thinking as they start their intercontinental collaborations. The lists of all 2023 HFSP awards are available at http://www.hfsp.org/awardees/newly-awarded.
