Carbon farming

Carbon farming involves adapting agricultural practices to achieve sustainable landscape management.

It can either increase the amount of carbon stored in soil and vegetation (sequestration) or reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Sequestration projects include:

  • replanting native forest
  • farm-based forestry
  • improving soil management to increase plant biomass and reduce soil disturbance.

Emissions reduction projects include:

  • reducing methane emissions from livestock
  • reducing fertiliser emissions
  • manure management.

Carbon farming roadmap

Carbon farming will help our primary industries and other sectors to reduce their emissions, through the generation and purchase of high-quality carbon offsets.

This roadmap guides the State Government and private sector to address risks and challenges of carbon farming, develop knowledge and skills, and take advantage of this new and evolving industry.

Opportunities

Carbon farming projects are specific to the local context and will take into account:

  • production systems
  • business or personal preferences
  • the financial rewards or opportunities available.

Growing Carbon Farming Pilot

The Growing Carbon Farming Pilot is a $1 million initiative to:

  • encourage carbon farming adoption
  • build the carbon market in South Australia.

The pilot will help deliver actions 3.3 and 3.6 of the South Australian Government’s Climate Change Action Plan.
