What's happening
We are analysing the public comment we have received on a draft masterplan for road, path and streetscape upgrades for the Maylands Town Centre.
This masterplan has been developed in consultation with the community and stakeholders following the closure of the Caledonian Avenue level crossing. It has the potential to encourage further growth and development, make Maylands’ streets more people-friendly and improve access and safety for everyone.
We will report on the outcomes of this consultation in the first half of 2024, and the feedback we have received will help inform any final refinements to the masterplan.
In mid-March 2024, we will also start work to upgrade the Hotham Bridge and install new traffic signals at the intersection of Whatley Crescent, allowing for a new right-turn lane. This upgrade will enable direct access to the Maylands town centre.

Since the Caledonian Avenue level crossing closed, the following works have already been completed:
- Installed new protected bike lanes on Railway Parade, making it safer for cyclists to travel between Meltham and Maylands station. Supported by a speed reduction to 50 km/h, these bike lanes were completed in late 2022.
- Installed a temporary safety treatment at the intersection of Guildford Road and Seventh Avenue, banning through and right turn movements from Seventh Avenue. This was completed in May 2023.
What is being proposed as part of the future masterplan?
- New traffic signals at Guildford Road and Seventh Avenue, reinstating all vehicle movements at the intersection and improving safety for road users (funded for construction in 2025-26).
- Upgraded traffic signals at Guildford Road and Eighth Avenue to improve pedestrian crossings (funded for construction in 2025-26).
- Traffic calming and streetscape upgrades on Whatley Crescent, Eighth Avenue, Seventh Avenue and Guildford Road (funding available for some elements on Whatley Crescent; the remainder subject to future funding).
- Potential bus transfer station to provide better connectivity to the town and train station (subject to future planning and funding).
