A NOTE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Last week we took time to pause and reflect on the significant role that our school support staff have in making schools a positive, safe and engaging place for our students, staff and community as part of School Support Recognition Week. We value the dedication and care that each of our non-teaching staff put into their job and I’d like to formally thank them and let them know how much we appreciate all that they do in our school and for public education. No task is too great, no question left unanswered and they always do their job with a smile on their face and a positive attitude - thank you!
On Wednesday evening I joined an audience of community members as we watched our junior and senior bands perform. They were incredible and displayed strong commitment and talent as they played their instruments with their peers, performing several pieces. I commend them on their efforts in learning how to read music and play an instrument, certainly not an easy task. Well done to these students, I look forward to many more opportunities to hear you play.
On a more serious note, we are seeking your help to support the students in our school who are at risk of anaphylaxis. Anaphylaxis is a severe allergic reaction that is potentially life-threatening. The most common causes of anaphylaxis in schools are food and insect allergies. The only way to prevent allergic reactions is to avoid being exposed to the allergen. Our school is supporting students at risk of anaphylaxis in the following ways: training staff; encouraging students to wash their hands and/or use hand sanitiser before and after eating; teaching students not to share food with friends; educating staff about allergies and anaphylaxis and following individual health care plans; and teaching students that teasing someone with an allergy is not acceptable behaviour.
Food allergy is now common in school aged children. Children can be allergic to any food, and it is not possible to completely remove all foods from our school. To help manage food allergies, our school is following NSW Department of Education policy and to minimise the risk of exposure to a high-risk allergen, schools must not use peanuts, tree nuts or any nut products in curriculum or extracurricular activities. This does not include food labelled as "may contain traces of nuts". These precautions apply to all schools whether or not any student is known to be at risk from anaphylaxis. A blanket ban on peanuts, tree nuts and nut products within the school is not required. Schools should not claim to be "peanut or nut free" as such a claim could not reliably be made and, if made, may lead to a false sense of security about exposure to peanuts and tree nuts.
We request that parents consider not sending nuts to school, including peanut butter sandwiches. We ask you to support the school’s risk minimisation strategies outlined so that we can increase safety and provide an environment that meets the needs of all our students.
Finally, a reminder that the Channel 7 Sunrise program will be visiting Sherwood Ridge PS on Monday morning, 18 September. Sam Mac will do 7 live crosses between 5:45am and 8:40am to showcase aspects of our school culture and our students, coinciding with weather forecasts. It should be an exciting and fun-filled experience for our students and school community! Please join us from 5.30am - we will have a community BBQ and a coffee van on site for all to enjoy.
As we move into the final week of the term, I’d like to wish our students and staff a fabulous and safe school holiday break. School resumes for Term 4 on Monday 9 October for all staff and students.
Kind regards,
Mrs Jody Sullivan
Principal

2024 SCHOOL ORGANISATION
The school will soon begin the complex process of organising class structures for 2024. In order to ensure that the needs of students are met, parents and carers are invited to forward information that you believe should be considered in regards to the formation of classes for next year. Requests can include information regarding medical conditions, requests to have particular children separated and or any other aspect that you feel may have an impact on your child’s learning.
Parents and carers are asked to forward requests to the Principal in writing no later than Friday 22 September 2023 to ensure that your child’s needs can be considered.
Please note that consideration for placement with specific teachers and or students are unable to be considered due to the size and complexity of the school.
STARTING KINDERGARTEN IN 2024?
If you have a child starting school next year it is important to enrol your child and to attend our Kindergarten Orientation held in Term 4. We are currently taking enrolments for 2024 and you are encouraged to contact the office staff if you have not yet completed an enrolment application or if you require assistance. This year, Mrs Sullivan, our Principal, has been conducting enrolment interviews with each Kindergarten student and their family in order to establish a positive connection and strong sense of belonging from the very beginning of their time at Sherwood Ridge Public School.

Hills Performing Arts Festival
On Thursday August 31 the Senior Choir, Senior Dance and Junior Dance groups participated in the Hills Performing Arts Festival at the Evans Theatre, Penrith.
The Senior choir performed as members of the combined choir alongside 3 other schools from the Hills District. They showcased their talents performing 7 songs throughout the night. Not only were glorious harmonies and melodies a focus, their incredible behaviour was also on display, as the choir remained on stage for the full 2 hour show.
The Senior Dance group performed a masterful lyrical piece entitled ‘Dream Big’. The dancers glided across the stage as they completed their clever choreography which even included some highly skilled lifts. Their precision and elegance was breathtaking and certainly what dreams are made of.
The Junior Dance group captivated the audience with their performance of ‘Look at Me Now’. Nobody could look away from the dance group’s beaming smiles and rhythmic moves, let alone the amazing, adorable costumes.
All performance groups should be congratulated on the many hours of effort they have put into rehearsals to perform to such a high standard. Well Done.

FROM THE LIBRARY
Book Week
As part of our Book Week celebration the author Aleesah Darlison visited our school. The Kindergarten, Year 1 and 2 students learnt about Fairy Tale Villians. “Who says that the wolf has to be a villian?” was one of the questions the author posed. Students got to role play and listen to stories. They were engaged, excited and had fun.
The Students in Years 3-6 learnt about characters and character development. They got to create their own character a space monster. The monsters the students created were amazing and detailed. Some students even started to plan and write their story.
Students also got to dress up for Book Character Day and share their favourite picture book with their buddies. It was great to see students sitting and sharing their stories.
The following students are the winners of our Book Week Competition where they had to choose which book would win CBCA picture book of the Year Award which was “My Strange Shrinking Parents”. The book that most students voted for but did not win was “Dirt by Sea”. Students who voted for this book also went into a prize draw.
