A NOTE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
What an exciting two weeks we have had here at Sherwood Ridge, there has been so much happening it is hard to know where to begin!
Starting with our youngest soon-to-be Sherwood Ridge students, we welcomed our 2024 Kindergarten students to school for their first two Kindergarten Orientation sessions as well as their parents for our Kindergarten Parent Information session. Such a wonderful and nervous time for these children and their families. Having met with all families for a ‘Meet the Principal’ interview it was so nice to continue to build relationships with both parents and carers and our youngest students. So many questions, so much information and so many smiling and happy faces for our little people as they left their orientation sessions. Kindergarten Orientation sessions are an extremely important step in ensuring our students begin school familiar and comfortable with their environment. It allows our teachers to best prepare for a smooth transition to school. We are looking forward to our final sessions over the coming weeks.
From our youngest to our oldest, we have the joy and excitement of the much anticipated Year 6 Mini Fete and of course it did not disappoint. Mrs Adamsons and the amazing Year 6 team of teachers ensured our Year 6 students were set up for success, with much planning, guiding and mentoring. Our Year 6 students put on such a variety of stalls with activities for all. The weather was perfect and our students K-6 were outstanding in their behaviour and engagement on the day. It was wonderful to be able to invite parents and community onsite to join in the fun or assist their children with the stalls. A huge thank you to the Year 6 parents who supported their children with resources, ideas and their time.
Finally, last week we also began our annual leadership process to elect our 2024 Student Leaders. Always a nervous and exciting time for our Year 5 students, as our nominated students presented their speeches to the Year 5 cohort. From this point, our top 8 male and female representatives, as voted by their peers, were notified of their progression to the next stage. In Week 7, these students will present their speeches to students in Years 2-6 where the leadership team will then be elected. The Captains, Vice Captains and Prefects will be announced at the Annual 3-6 Presentation Day Assembly. I wish all representatives the best of luck as they prepare for this important event!
Kind regards,
Mrs Jody Sullivan

2T’S CHARACTER DESCRIPTIONS
After reading the story 'Grubby Gertrude' by David Walliams, students in Class 2T completed a character profile using adjectives to Gertrude's behaviour, appearance and personality. From here they used their adjectives to create a detailed character description. Students then had the opportunity to publish their work choosing a font and picture of their choice. We have selected two pieces of work to share with you:

Selective High School Applications Open
Selective high schools provide a learning environment designed for academically gifted and high potential students. They help students learn by:
- Grouping them with other gifted students
- Using specialised teaching methods so students can learn at a quicker pace and in more detail
- Supporting their unique wellbeing needs
Most students in selective high schools enjoy learning more when their classmates have similar abilities and interests. Research shows that students benefit both academically and socially from the learning environment in selective high schools. Selective high schools are unzoned so you can apply no matter where you live.
Where are they located?
There are 47 selective high schools for Year 7 entry in NSW with:
- 17 selective high schools
- 25 partially selective high schools
- 4 agricultural selective high schools (3 that offer boarding)
- Aurora College, for rural and remote students available in 182 authorised host schools.
Check the selective high school map to find one near you. Or look up the selective high schools list.
Is a selective high school the right fit for my child?
If your child learns quickly, asks complex questions, has a good memory or is intensely focused in their area of interest, then a selective high school might be a great fit. Discuss the opportunity with your child and look through the information together on Selective high schools – Year 7 and in the new student resource hub.
Fair and equitable access
The Equity Placement Model helps make access fairer for more high potential students in our community.
We know that some students may be missing out because they experience educational disadvantage.
Under the Model, up to 20% of student places at each selective high school are held for:
- students from low socio-educational advantage backgrounds
- Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander students
- students from rural and remote locations
- students with disability.
These students can be offered a place if their test performance is within 10% of the lowest general applicant first-round offer for the school. Learn more at Equity Placement Model.
The application process
Complete the online application. Applications opened on Monday 9 October.
Applications close on 20 November 2023.
Once the application has been submitted and processed your child will be allocated to a test centre to sit the Selective High School Placement Test on 9 May 2024. Selective high school places are offered based on students’ test performance (academic merit). Learn more about the placement process and the placement test at Selective high schools and opportunity classes.
