A NOTE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
It has been a productive start to Term 3 beginning with NAIDOC Week with the theme ‘For our Elders’. Students engaged in Aboriginal education activities in classrooms across the school and then had such fun at the Jollybops Science incursion.
We hosted formal parent teacher interviews where our class teachers shared their knowledge of student progress with families, always such an important part of the reporting cycle. This year we gave our parents and carers a choice of whether to come on site to meet class teachers in person or to have their interview over the phone. We hope that this supported working parents and carers in our community.
Miss Amanda Millgate and Mrs Kiarni Vella have returned from maternity leave. Both of these talented teachers will teach RFF across the school and Mrs Vella will co-teach Class 4R with Ms Rose on Fridays.
The holiday period provided opportunity to complete some minor and major works in the school. The support unit playground space is complete and the P&C are holding an official opening for these students and their families on Friday of next week. Thank you once again to our P&C and our community for raising the funds to enable this project to go ahead to further meet the needs of our support unit students. In addition to this, a fence has been installed around the staff carpark to ensure community safety. In other exciting news, all student bathroom doors have been brightly painted as part of the SRC project to upgrade our bathrooms.
With the successful completion of external validation last term, we will now focus on moving into the next stage of the school excellence cycle and will begin to complete a situational analysis. We will be seeking community input on this over the semester leading into the creation of a new school plan.
Finally, as you know this week is Education Week with the theme ‘175 years of Public Education in NSW’ focused on learning from our past, celebrating our achievements and embracing the future with confidence. At Sherwood Ridge we celebrated learning and showcased talent as part of whole school Education Week celebrations. This included Open Day on Tuesday where we shared morning tea with our parents and carers as they viewed the impressive learning display that our devoted staff set up in our learning centre. We then invited our community into classrooms, had a shared morning tea followed by creative arts performances in the hall. It truly was a wonderful day!
Kind regards,
Mrs Jody Sullivan
Principal

STARTING KINDERGARTEN IN 2024?
If you have a child starting school next year it is important to enrol your child and to attend our Kindergarten Orientation held in Term 4. We are currently taking enrolments for 2024 and you are encouraged to contact the office staff if you have not yet completed an enrolment application or if you require assistance.
Preparing for Kindergarten
Parents can do a lot to help prepare their child for Kindergarten before the big 'first day'. Below is a list of skills that will be useful for children starting Kindergarten. We recognise that not all children will have these skills as everyone develops at a different pace, so this is intended only as a guide so that starting school may be just a little easier. Encourage your child to attempt the things mentioned below, but don't worry if your child can't do all of them. Talk to the Kindergarten teacher, and together you can support and assist your child's learning.
Personal/Social Skills
- uses the toilet independently
- can say own name and address
- adapts to unfamiliar settings and new experiences
- can finish a task, and tidies up afterwards
- plays cooperatively with other children - shares and takes turns
- can sit still to listen to a story for a few minutes
- participates in imaginative play
2024 SCHOOL ORGANISATION
The school will soon begin the complex process of organising class structures for 2024. In order to ensure that the needs of students are met, parents and carers are invited to forward information that you believe should be considered in regard to the formation of classes for next year. Requests can include information regarding medical conditions, requests to have particular children separated and or any other aspect that you feel may have an impact on your child’s learning.
Parents and carers are asked to forward requests to the Principal in writing no later than Friday 22 September 2023 to ensure that your child’s needs can be considered.
Please note that consideration for placement with specific teachers and or students are unable to be considered due to the size and complexity of the school.
HAVE YOUR SAY ON YOUR CHILD’S EDUCATION
The NSW Department of Education is developing a new plan for NSW public education. We want to hear from our parents, carers, and community on this important work.
Our draft plan for NSW public education outlines how we will create an outstanding and equitable education system and uplift trust and pride in the teaching profession. It has a focus on how public education can transform lives and sets aspirations for every learner.
We invite you to have your say on this important work. You can do this by visiting the department's draft plan for NSW public education.
Here you will find an online engagement platform that can be used to share your feedback. It will take between a few minutes to 10 minutes, depending on the level of feedback you wish to provide.
Consultation will take place between Monday 17 July 2023 and Friday 25 August 2023. If you have any questions about the draft plan, or the consultation, contact the Department of Education at engageTD@det.nsw.edu.au.

NAPLAN Student Results
Dear Year 3 and 5 Parents and Carers,
Last Thursday you will have received your child’s NAPLAN results. They were sent home in their bags, along with information about the report. When reading your child’s NAPLAN 2023 results please keep in mind:
- From 2023, new proficiency standards were introduced to NAPLAN reporting. This reporting replaces the previous numerical NAPLAN reporting bands and national minimum standards.
- A performance result less than expected may indicate the student requires more targeted support or may just reflect other factors that affected their performance on that day.
- Proficiency standards provide clear information on student achievement. They are set at a challenging but reasonable level expected for the child at the time of NAPLAN testing, based mainly on what has been taught in previous years of schooling.
- Individual students may demonstrate different skills or understandings depending on which parts of the tests they performed more strongly in. Students whose results fall near the top of a proficiency level will be able to demonstrate more of the skills, or more complex understanding. Students whose results fall near the lower end of a level will be able to demonstrate fewer of the skills, or less complex understanding.
- It is important to remember NAPLAN tests are one aspect of a school’s assessment and reporting process. They complement ongoing assessments so that teachers can best support teaching and learning. The achievement demonstrated in classroom-based assessments and reporting through A-E grades provide parents with timely feedback on how their child is progressing.
We encourage any parent or carer who is concerned about their child’s NAPLAN results to talk to your child’s teacher. If your child's results indicate that they ‘Need additional support’, please contact your child’s teacher to discuss, as additional support may already be available to those students who need it.

3-6 Athletics Carnival
On Wednesday 2 August 2023, students in Years 2-6 attended the 2023 Athletics Carnival at AH Whaling Reserve. Students came dressed to represent their sporting house and were eager to participate in events, such as 100m, 200m,800m, 1500m, Long Jump and novelty rotations.
Placegetters will be awarded with their ribbons at upcoming School Assemblies.
- Year 2 place getters at the K-2 Assembly on 7 August at 11:00am.
- Year 3-6 place getters at the 3-6 Assembly on 14 August at 11:30am.
We would also like to send a BIG THANK YOU to all the parents who helped and supported our staff and students throughout the day. Parents helped with timekeeping and long jump and it would not have been possible to run such a smooth carnival without their support. Thank you, thank you! It was also amazing to see so many parents at the carnival supporting their children. It really helps to create a fun and exciting carnival for our students.
Thank you again.

Scholastic Book Fair
Our school is hosting a Scholastic Book Fair from 18-23 August during Book Week.
You and your child will have the opportunity to explore a huge range of affordable books featuring characters and subjects kids love and want to read about. From newly released books and bestsellers to award-winning titles and perennial favourites.
Students will be viewing the books from 18th August and purchasing from 21 -23 August.
Parents can purchase books from 8.30-9.00 and 3.00-3.30 Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday and after the K-2 Athletics Carnival.
This is also a great way for you to learn about and discuss your child's interests and every book sold benefits our school, adding resources to our library and classrooms.
