A NOTE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
What a wonderful fortnight of events we have had! From the K-2 Athletics Carnival, Stage Public Speaking Finals, Book Fair, Character Dress Up Day, Anti-Bullying Parent/Carer Information Session, CHPSSA Zone Athletics Carnival, Tallowood SSP integration visits to our support unit, Class Parent/Carer Meetings, Hills Performing Arts Festival performance, Jersey Day to the P&C Father’s Day Stall and school Father’s Day Afternoon Tea this afternoon, we have been busy!
Student voice is highly valued at SRPS and over the last two weeks I have met with our Student Representative Council (SRC) members from Years K-6 to gain their opinion on how they think we are going as a school with fostering community engagement and cultural inclusion. Our students shared their views on these important topics and raised some valid points. I will use this information to triangulate the data from students, staff and parents/carers to ascertain a starting point for our next school plan to further establish our parent connections and to meet the needs of our diverse school community.
On Tuesday, we hosted a group of Assistant Principal, Curriculum and Instruction (AP, C&I) leaders from across The Ponds local network of primary schools. This new middle leadership position is vital in supporting teaching and learning of literacy and numeracy, ensuring that each student makes one year of learning growth each year. Each time this group meets, the host school shares a model of best practice. For us, this time we decided to showcase our Data Talks initiative. Our talented Year 4 team of teachers - Mr Dixon, Mrs Mason, Ms Rose, Mr Lee and Mrs McFadden worked with our very own AP, C&I Mrs Brodie and Deputy Principal Mrs Blacker to conduct a ‘live’ data talk discussion about mathematics for the visiting leaders. Their knowledge of curriculum, expertise in teaching strategies and understanding of where their students are at and what they need to do in order to further progress learning was evident and admired by all who witnessed the session. We have worked hard to develop a culture of effective, evidence-based teaching and ongoing improvement to reduce gaps in learning for our students and it was wonderful to share this across the learning community of schools.
I’d like to invite parents and carers, including our new Kindergarten 2024 families, to our next P&C meeting to be held at school on Friday 15 September from 9:00am-9:45am in the Learning Centre. Parental involvement in school is of great benefit to students and the overall culture of the school. Good parent-school partnerships are one of the best ways to ensure that student wellbeing and learning are prioritised and nourished. Did you know that children who have parents/carers involved in their school perform better academically, feel valued and important, and have improved social, physical and emotional wellbeing?
Attending a P&C meeting is a way of connecting with other families, finding out what is happening across the school from senior leaders and to use your voice to influence decisions. For more information on NSW P&C, follow this link:
Finally, I am excited to inform our community that the Channel 7 Sunrise program will be visiting Sherwood Ridge PS on the morning of Monday 18 September 2023. Sunrise reaches a national television audience of over 1.2 million viewers each morning and travel to different states and venues to host their program. The producer reached out and asked if we would like them to visit our school and of course we said yes! Sam Mac will do 7 live crosses between 5:45am and 8:40am to showcase aspects of our school culture and our students, coinciding with weather forecasts. More information will be sent out to all students with particular details in the coming days.
A reminder that students are to wear full School Summer Uniform from Monday 4 September.
Wishing our fathers a very happy Father’s Day!
Kind regards,
Mrs Jody Sullivan
Principal

2024 SCHOOL ORGANISATION
The school will soon begin the complex process of organising class structures for 2024. In order to ensure that the needs of students are met, parents and carers are invited to forward information that you believe should be considered in regards to the formation of classes for next year. Requests can include information regarding medical conditions, requests to have particular children separated and or any other aspect that you feel may have an impact on your child’s learning.
Parents and carers are asked to forward requests to the Principal in writing no later than Friday 22 September 2023 to ensure that your child’s needs can be considered.
Please note that consideration for placement with specific teachers and or students are unable to be considered due to the size and complexity of the school.
STARTING KINDERGARTEN IN 2024?
If you have a child starting school next year it is important to enrol your child and to attend our Kindergarten Orientation held in Term 4. We are currently taking enrolments for 2024 and you are encouraged to contact the office staff if you have not yet completed an enrolment application or if you require assistance. This year, Mrs Sullivan, our Principal, will meet with each Kindergarten student and their family in order to establish a positive connection and strong sense of belonging from the very beginning of their time at Sherwood Ridge Public School.
STUDENTS NOT RETURNING IN 2024
It is that time of year where we are making decisions regarding school structures for 2024. If your child is in Kindergarten - Year 5 in 2023 and not returning to Sherwood Ridge Public School in 2024, please advise via the below email address. Please also include the school that your child will be attending in 2024.

Stage 3 Fri-Yay Student Voice
On Friday 18 August, Stage 3 students, teachers, parents and carers joined together for another Fri-Yay event. Here are some of the students' thoughts and feelings about their participation.
- I enjoyed:
- playing handball with my Mum and my friends and playing a little bit of newcombe ball.
- art with 6MB and 6G because we did art. Like we got half of a printed animal and sketched the other half and it was funny because everyone's art looked nothing like the printed side.
- The best thing about FriYay is:
- that it brings kids and parents together and you have loads of fun!
- meeting my friends’ parents.
- that I got to spend time with my mum at school.
- Term 2 FriYay was better because:
- it was outdoor and it was fun versing the parents in a game of newcombe ball.
- Uit was more hands-on and interactive.
- If there was another FriYay, I…
- would try different activities with my Dad instead.
- would have a wider spread of activities, including sports.
- would like to do art, sport and science.
Warhammer Alliance
Students in the Warhammer Alliance have had a busy term painting.
The results of the Term 2 competition have come back with 6 Sherwood students, Prithvi, Anosh, Mona, Sophie, Olivia and Anthony, entering their Cadian troopers for judging.
Anosh secured first place for online voting, while Mona and Anthony tied for equal first place for in-store voting.
This term’s models, Seraphon skinks, have been submitted by Anosh, Shanaya and Trystan.
Students looking to participate in the next painting competition can collect and build their free miniatures at the Warhammer store in Baulkham hills and then paint them at school.
Best of luck for our entrants!
Mr McConnell
Winner of the Parramatta Eels Jersey
During weeks 5 and 6, Year 6 sold raffle tickets for the chance to win a signed Parramatta Eels Jersey which was kindly donated by visiting Eels’ players last year. The total raised was a huge $563 so thank you to everyone who purchased tickets. A special shout out to Mr Bell whose generosity and help was very much appreciated by Year 6. The proceeds will go towards the Year 6 Farewell, Graduation and gift to the school.
The winner was drawn on Monday 28 August and the lucky person was Georgia B from 6MB. Congratulations Georgia and once again, a massive thank you to all who bought tickets.
