Reading is important
Reading has always been an important skill. In our modern world it is more important than ever.
Children learn about the importance of reading as they watch family members use reading and writing for everyday purposes.
Reading with your child at home will help your child in all learning areas of school.
Children see you reading and writing in everyday life - reading for pleasure, sharing a story with your child, using a recipe, making a shopping list, writing a birthday card or reading street signs. This teaches them that reading and writing are useful skills in today's world.
Students will be taking home 3 books only once per week (on nominated class day). They can select one book from each of the following categories:
Australian decodables
Books that students can read independently by segmenting and blending (decoding and fluency).
llll decodables
Books that students can read independently by segmenting and blending (decoding and fluency).
pm readers
Books that students can read with a parent or family member and talk about (comprehension and vocabulary).
How the Home Reading Program works:
Book Selection: Children will be able to borrow three books per week (two decodable books and one PM reader). Your child and their teacher will select books that are appropriate for their reading goals. These books will often be ones that children can read independently to allow them to reinforce the skills they are learning at school. These books will be sent home on a weekly basis. Your child’s teacher will confirm which day books will be exchanged.
Reading Schedule: We encourage you to set aside a specific time each day for reading. Consistency is key in building strong reading habits.
Returning Books: Books can only be returned once per week. If your child is absent on the day that books are exchanged, they can be exchanged the following week. Any books that are damaged or not returned will incur a $15 replacement fee per book.
Communication: If you have any questions or concerns about the home reading program or your child's progress, please don't hesitate to contact your child's teacher. We are here to support you and your child every step of the way.
We believe that the home reading program plays a significant role in fostering strong reading skills and a lifelong love of literature. We look forward to partnering with you to make this a successful and enjoyable experience for your child.
