Dear Parents, Carers and Community Members
As I write the newsletter this week, I write with a heavy heart, with my time at St Clare’s coming to an end in a few short weeks. St Clare’s is a great school and we have so much more to do and achieve before the school year ends. We are focussed on ensuring that all students have a great finish to the year and that everything is in place for 2024 and the new principal.
On Monday, 27 November we held a Parent Information Evening for Year 10 2024 Parents. The evening was an opportunity to present parents a change in the structure for Year 10 Cohort for 2024. This is a shift that will see students grouped in into three core learning groups, Aspire, Engage and Connect groups across English and core subject of Religion, Science, PDHPE and History/Geography.
The change, which was informed by a variety of data, is to address the learning needs of all students and ensure we as a school can provide the best learning outcomes, opportunities for growth and preparedness for Year 11 and 12. I want to thank the parents/carers that attended the evening, for parent/carers that were unable to attend, a copy of the presentation will be posted shortly.
In the last newsletter I wrote how important Reflection days are for students to participate in. ‘Reflection days provide the opportunity for students to reflect on the past 12 months, develop their understanding of what it means to be a St Clare’s student, improve relationships with staff and fellow peers and most importantly build the sense of community amongst the year group.’
Just as important are the award ceremonies that will occur on Friday, 15 December on the students last day of the year. They are an opportunity to celebrate success within a particular year group, individually and collectively as a cohort, while further building a sense of community.
I would hope that all students take the time to fully participate in these important activities as we close out the year.
‘Together with Christ we serve our community’.
Inspired by GOSPEL VALUES and the practical examples of St Mary of The Cross MacKillop and St Clare of Assisi our Mission is to…
CONNECT LEARN ASPIRE RESPECT ENGAGE
Kind Regards

Principal

“If you swear at someone, or about someone, you are actually committing an act of verbal violence. You transgress the usual rules of social interaction, impinging upon someone's self-image and their sense of dignity."

The Year 9 Religious Studies curriculum focuses on how we can live justly in a modern world by following Catholic Social Teachings and promoting the dignity of every human person. In Genesis 1:26-27 it outlines that God made us in his image and we are all born with inherent dignity and the right to live our life to the fullest. Due to the injustices in our world, this is not always possible.
Students focused on the symbols of peace in the world, including the paper crane, which has become synonymous with hope and healing after times of war. In working towards folding these cranes, Year 9 students focused on the story of Sadako and the Thousand paper cranes, looking at the injustice caused by the use of Atomic Weapons and war. This story continues to ring true in today’s world and now the paper cranes serve as a reminder that war will always cause injustice and as Catholics, we should always promote and pray for peace, healing and hope.
The 2023 cranes are now on display in the front office and every year students will continue to contribute to the display to recognise the ongoing need for peace and justice.

Every year students in Year 8 and 10 complete a Diocesan wide test on their knowledge and understanding of the Religious Studies Syllabus and their competency in using religious terminology and content in written form. In the recent Year 10 Religious Literacy Test, completed in Term 3, many students from St Clare’s were recognised for their high level of achievement and obtaining a mark above the religious literacy standard. This is a significant achievement and reflects their dedication to learning, aspirations to do their best and engagement with their coursework.

As we move towards the end of Term 4, we recognise the joy that many feel about the impending Christmas break and the well-deserved rest for our students and staff. As a Catholic community we look forward to the coming of the Lord at Christmas and celebrating the joy of Christ's presence in our lives. The Advent Season, which begins on Sunday, is the passage of time in which we celebrate the coming of Jesus and set out on a spiritual journey to find the fullness of life in Jesus. Around the school Nativity scenes are present to serve as a reminder of the simplicity of Christ's birth and a way to open our hearts to the simple grace of Christmas and the precious gift that God gave us in Jesus.
Pope Francis' Apostolic Letter Admirabile Signum highlighted the importance and meaning of the Nativity scene in a modern word. He calls on us to "Open our hearts to this simple grace, so that from our wonderment a humble prayer may arise: a prayer of thanksgiving to God, who wished to share with us his all, and thus never to leave us alone."
Link to the entire Apostolic Letter Admirabile Signum:
In Religious Studies classes over the next three weeks, students will engage in faith-based Advent activities to heighten their awareness of Christmas imagery, symbols and traditions. This will end with us considering the needs of others in the Advent season and creating Christmas Cards for members of our local community.

Congratulations to our U14’s boys and both our U16’s girls and boys Rugby League teams, who travelled to Port Macquarie for the NRL Summer 7’s Gala Day on Tuesday, 28 November. All teams displayed exceptional skill, resilience, and sportsmanship in every match, delivering remarkable performances and highly entertaining Rugby League displays.
U14 Boys
St Clare’s 14's Boys orchestrated a try-scoring spectacle, dominating the 14's Boys division with a trifecta of victories. Their offensive prowess was on full display, starting with a commanding 16-0 win over Camden Haven High School in the first round. The team continued their impressive run with a strategic 12-4 triumph over St Paul's College in the second round and a resounding 24-8 victory over Mackillop College in the third round. The boys showcased slick plays, solid tackles, and strategic manoeuvres across all their pool matches. Despite no finals for this age division, St Clare’s 14's Boys left a lasting impression with their dominant performances throughout the tournament. Well done, boys.

The team orchestrated a powerful comeback in the second round, securing a commanding 24-16 victory over St Paul's College. In a pivotal semi-final clash against crossroad rivals Chatham High School, the match concluded in a tense 12-12 draw. Despite St Clare’s holding a 12-4 lead with less than 5 minutes to play, Chatham High School secured a place in the final by scoring the first try of the match. St Clare’s resiliently displayed defensive grit and unwavering determination and should be proud of their efforts across the day.

Their undefeated streak included a 1st round triumph over Camden Haven High School with a scoreline of 16-8, followed by a compelling second-round victory against Kempsey High School, also 16-8. The semi-final clash against St Paul's College was a hard-fought battle resulting in a 12-8 victory, showcasing their resilience and determination. The final act witnessed their crowning moment as champions, defeating Mackillop College with a resounding 16-4 triumph. This impeccable run underscored not only their skilful play but also the seamless teamwork and sheer dominance exhibited across the entire day. Congratulations and well-done girls.
