Dear Parents, Carers and Community Members
It seems we only just started Term 4 but already we are moving into Week 5 and a very busy time for both staff and students as formal end of year assessments/examinations get under way for Year 10 and quickly followed by Years 7 to 9. This can be a very stressful time for the students. Kids Helpline has put together a list of strategies that may help young people manage examination stress. It lists what signs parents should look for and what students can do to help themselves through effective study as well as sleeping and eating habits. There is also a video from Toasted TV to help kids understand they are not alone when experiencing examination stress.

HSC exams have only just concluded this week and we have received wonderful feedback from the NESA supervisors who have guided our Year 12 cohort for 2023 through the exam process. The supervisors have noted that all students have been well prepared, on time, and have worked with diligence and sustained effort for the entire duration of each exam. A big thank you to Theresa Avery, Assistant Principal Learning & Teaching and Bronwen Davidson Year 12 Leader of Wellbeing & Engagement and all St Clare’s teachers and support staff who have spent many years preparing the group for the completion of Year 12 and as they move into the next phase of their lives. We will celebrate the Year 12 cohorts time at St Clare’s with family and friends on Friday, 10 November with their Awards Presentation in the Josephite Learning Centre here at school followed by dinner and dancing at the Winning Post Function Centre.
As such, St Clare’s High School is excited to announce that we will be shortly adding an award-winning resource to our school website. The resource, SchoolTV, includes evidenced-based information and practical strategies to build parent, carer and educator knowledge and confidence across a range of mental health and wellbeing topics.
The Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle supported St Clare’s to add SchoolTV to our website in response to feedback received from parents and carers who said they are seeking greater support in understanding the challenges their children are experiencing, as well as practical strategies for ways they can assist them.
SchoolTV features interviews with leading wellbeing experts and researchers from around the world, on topics including:
- Mental Health (encompassing grief and loss, suicide and self-harm, drug and alcohol use, anxiety, trauma and depression).
- Healthy Bodies (including mindfulness, body image, sleep, eating disorders, diet and nutrition, physical activity and exercise).
- Cyber Safety (encompassing cyberbullying, digital reputation, internet addiction, online gambling, sexting and managing screen time).
- Positive Parenting (including friendship and belonging, blended families, resilience, positive parenting and understanding adolescence).
- School Survival (encompassing school refusal, school transitions and exam jitters).
- Diversity and Inclusion (including multiculturalism, neurodiversity, respectful relationships, gender diversity and supporting children with a disability).
These topics are presented in a variety of ways including videos, factsheets, podcasts and SchoolTV also includes recommendations for additional resources including books, apps and other websites.
While we will continue to host parent and carer information events as a school, one of the many benefits of SchoolTV is that you can watch it pre-emptively or as the need arises.
From time to time, we may also promote key topics contained in SchoolTV for families either through Compass, our newsletter or Facebook, when they coincide with student learning and/or matters arising in our school community.
Importantly, SchoolTV compliments initiatives already underway in our school including our Student Wellbeing and Pastoral Care Policy, our CLARE lessons and the Diocese “Wellbeing Together” Student Learning and Wellbeing Framework.
Our staff will be provided with some Professional development to become familiar with SchoolTV, and as such, I am confident that this shared knowledge between staff and parents will assist us all in partnering together to better support children and young people’s learning, safety, mental health and wellbeing.
If you have any questions about SchoolTV, or the topics contained within the site, please get in touch with our Wellbeing Team leader Mrs Marian Parvin or myself.

Year 11 spent last week on retreat at The Francis Retreat Bonny Hills. Their retreat started with a beach walk and some wild weather. On the second day, the group tested themselves with a surfing challenge. From there, students continued to care for each other, weaving friendship bracelets and sharing their life experiences. They will carry these bonds into the 2024 HSC year.
Thank you to Mrs Nicole Lovern and Mr Jason Koenig for all your organisation and for making this a memorable retreat for all.

Winston Churchill once said “We make a living by what we get. We make a life by what we give.” This quote is certainly apt for our Year 10 students who volunteered at the Community Kitchen on Wednesday, 25 October. They worked tirelessly and created a variety of healthy nutritious meals for those in need in our community. Nyoka, Rachel, Thalia and Alexander prepared and served Sweet & Sour Chicken, Lasagna, Savoury Mince and Chicken Carbonara. The clients at the kitchen were impressed by the students happy smiling faces and were keen to know where they were from. These students represented their school in a manner in which their parents and school can be very proud of them. Well done St Clare’s.

The community kitchen offered us a unique experience and gave us the opportunity to contribute to our community. I loved working with my friends to prepare meals and connecting with other people in our community. The challenging part about working in the kitchen was keeping up with the rush of people coming in. Although it was challenging at first, we managed to keep up after a while. At the end of the day, the most rewarding part about volunteering was being able to bring a smile to someone's face.

St Clare’s 7-8 Girls Basketball Team Shows Grit in Intense Basketball Championship
Date: 30 & 31 October 2023
After being undefeated at the Diocesan Basketball Championships in August this year, the 7-8 Girls Basketball team headed to Bankstown to represent the Maitland-Newcastle Diocese at the NSW CCC Championship.
In an action-packed two-day basketball tournament, the girls showcased their determination and skill as they faced formidable opponents. The team competed in seven hard-fought games, experiencing a rollercoaster of emotions.
Day 1:
The tournament began on a promising note as St Clare’s clashed with McAuley Catholic Central, Tumut. The team's grit and determination on the court was evident as they secured a hard-fought victory with a final score of 17-13. The win provided a strong start and instilled confidence in the girls.
In their second game, they faced a formidable opponent in St Ursula's, Kingsgrove. The match was fiercely contested, with our girls battling throughout. Ultimately, they came up just short, concluding the game with a score of 24-17, showcasing their fighting spirit and determination.
The third game saw the team taking on the tough and experienced Mount St Benedict College, Pennant Hills. Despite their relentless effort, our girls faced a challenging opponent and concluded the game with a score of 32-18. Their unwavering effort was commendable.
During the evening, the girls had the opportunity to bond and relax over dinner, strengthening their camaraderie and team spirit.
Day 2:
The second day of the tournament brought fresh challenges, starting with a match against one of the top teams, St Mary Star of the Sea, Wollongong. The girls displayed their mettle on the court but faced a formidable adversary, resulting in a 40-17 loss.
The following game was against Monte Sant' Angelo Mercy College, North Sydney. Our girls put on an impressive performance, leading throughout the game. However, an unfortunate turn of events in the last 60 seconds resulted in a heartbreaking loss, with a final score of 31-28.
In another closely contested match against McCarthy College, Tamworth, our girls once again showcased their resilience and determination. They emerged victorious with a score of 21-18, highlighting their ability to maintain composure under pressure.
The last game of the day was against Loreto, Kirribilli. The girls demonstrated their unwavering fighting spirit, and their hard work paid off as they secured another well-deserved win of 24-17.
I praise the team's outstanding effort and perseverance throughout the tournament. The girls demonstrated incredible determination and sportsmanship in each game. They faced tough challenges, but came together as a team, learnt from each experience, and ended on a high note with two wins. They should all be incredibly proud of their efforts.
Throughout the tournament, Danya Gillard did a commendable job at bench duty, always ready, willing, and capable to tackle the task head on. A big thank you to Danya.
Heartfelt gratitude to the supportive parents and family members who offered support, encouragement, and enthusiastic cheers from the sidelines. The team was lucky to have such a crucial support system.
The St Clare’s basketball team's journey in this intense tournament was marked by valuable experiences, lessons, and moments of triumph. Their unity, determination, and resilience are characteristics that bode well for their future endeavours in the world of school basketball. The school community eagerly awaits their continued growth and success in the sport.

This week sees the end of Week 4 Term 4.
The Year 12 students completed their HSC exams yesterday– woohoo! Well done to everyone on your efforts. Don’t forget, Year 12, to bring back your textbooks and complete your pink sign-out form.
The Year 12 Graduation ceremony begins at 5:00 pm on Friday, 10 November. It will be wonderful to celebrate with the students the culmination of their school years.
I would like to remind anyone that is applying for EAS via UAC that the due date for all this information is Midnight Thursday, 23 November 2023 to ensure you receive your eligibility letter in time to change your preferences for Round 2.
I have already worked with quite a few students regarding this and I am happy to help with anything else that I can. Students and/or parents can contact me by phone 6552 3300) or by email (karen.mccann@mn.catholic.edu.au) to arrange a suitable time to meet. This can be via Zoom if necessary.
Regarding SRS offers, I have included information directly from the UAC website as follows:
Offers
Participating institutions can use a range of criteria when making SRS offers, including your: − school’s rating of your aptitudes − Year 11 studies − Educational Access Scheme (EAS) application (if applicable).
Each institution has its own policies on determining SRS eligibility and making offers. If your application is successful, you will receive your offer by email in November.
There are two types of SRS offers: − unconditional offers (which have no further criteria for you to meet) − conditional offers (which require you to meet additional criteria).
In November, you can receive one unconditional offer and one or more conditional offers.
Unconditional offers: Accept your unconditional offer, even if it’s for your lowest course preference. You will automatically be considered for your higher preferences in later rounds. If you receive an unconditional offer to one of your higher preferences and want to be considered for all your other preferences in later rounds: − accept the offer − log in to your UAC undergraduate application, go to ‘Update Course Preferences’ and move that course down to the bottom of your course preference list or remove it entirely (as long as you have accepted the offer, you can’t lose it).
Key dates Schools Recommendation Scheme 2023 – 18 September SRS applications close:
10 November - First SRS conditional and unconditional offers released
21 December - Conditional SRS offers converted to unconditional offers
11 January 2024 - Conditional SRS offers converted to unconditional offers
Schools Recommendation Scheme 03 If you then receive an offer to a course in your new list, you can decide whether to accept it and withdraw from your original course, or not accept the new offer and keep your place in your original course.
Conditional offers: To convert your conditional offer to an unconditional offer, you must − meet the condition/s stipulated in the offer − meet all other institution requirements for that course − include the course in your list of preferences by midnight 16 December 2023 (closing date of change of preference for December Round 2).
Unsuccessful Applicants
UAC won’t advise applicants who do not receive an offer through SRS. An unsuccessful SRS application has no effect on your UAC undergraduate application
Careers Association of Australia Conference
Last Thursday and Friday I attended the annual Careers Association of Australia conference in Sydney. As usual it was exceptionally well run and there was a great deal of information on hand as well as the opportunity to network with fellow Careers Advisers. I have returned to St Clare’s with renewed energy and enthusiasm about the many post school pathways.
Commonwealth Supported Places
I visited Notre Dame University and was very pleased to hear that all their undergraduate courses for 2024 will be Commonwealth Supported Places (CSP). This means that the cost of each unit in the degree is significantly reduced. For example, if the normal price of the unit is $3000 then it would be reduced to around $800. This is a huge saving.
It is worth checking with each university if they offer CSPs. Quite a few do, depending on the degree.
The Academy of Interactive Entertainment
I was also able to visit AIE (The Academy of Interactive Entertainment) in Sydney. They specialise in Online Games, Film and Visual Effects. They have courses ranging from Diplomas to Bachelor-Degrees and provide a huge range of courses. There are scholarships available as well. You need to provide a portfolio and attend an interview to be considered for a place at the Academy. I have the information in my office if anyone is interested.
SBATs/Apprenticeships/Traineeships
I was also impressed by the range of “Water” careers across Australia. Again, the range of qualifications required start at Certificate II and go up to an Engineering Degree. There are going to be a range of SBATs available from 2024 on.
Over the past weeks I have received quite a few emails from employers looking for students to fill positions. Mid Coast Connect and VERTO send me information about apprenticeships and traineeships in our area and MidCoast Council have advertised several positions for 2024. I have emailed all the information to the students in Years 10, 11 and 12. So please CHECK YOUR EMAILS.
I also put the information in the Year Group Careers OneNote which all the students should have access to.
Regarding some of these positions, the student needs to come and see me for further information. That information is in the email if relevant.
