A message from our future leaders!

As part of the Timboon Agriculture Project (TAP) we recently we got the opportunity to throw down a challenge to Timboon P12 primary students and I think they delivered big time.

Students were asked to help us invite international students to visit our area and make them feel welcomed and supported when they arrive.

The challenge presented was aligned to the “Interconnected world” topic of Victoria’s geography curriculum.

• Students discussed and listed our neighbours and partners in Asia.
• We workshopped exports and imports, cultural influences, aid, security and our individual roles as residents, travellers, hosts and ambassadors.
• Then we discussed what we knew about each of our neighbours, what our perception of them was and what they might think of us.
• Students learned about the important cultural economic and cultural exchange presented by international students and were surprised by the number of international students studying in Victoria.

As a Visitor Information Centre we base a lot of our service and marketing goals around “intended emotion.”  Students were asked what words would describe how we want our visitors to feel when they arrived and were served by businesses in the area. We were so impressed by their responses we had to share them on the banner at the top of this page.

Fresh with the idea of “intended emotion” in their heads we sent our young leaders back to the classroom to focus their ideas on the trail extension from Timboon to Port Campbell and its connection to the Camperdown – Timboon Rail Trail. Students concentrated on themes including local produce, food tourism, active outdoors, flora, fauna and local history. We have presented some of their persuasive texts to inspire even more visitors to our region and reinforce our global connections through tourism and trade.

Wow, maybe next year we can encourage them to extend on this work and incorporate digital content and storytelling into their work.

What you need to know!

• Don’t have a car, don’t have a problem!
• You can get here without a vehicle if you are prepared to catch a V-Line train from Southern Cross to Camperdown ($10.60 daily fare cap) bring a bike or e-bike or organize a hire to ride the Camperdown – Timboon Rail Trail 34km.
• You can also take advantage of a bus service between Timboon and Camperdown that runs on a Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
• Enjoy all there is to taste, see and explore around Timboon.
• Why not extend your trip on trail from to Timboon to Port Campbell 19km, recover with sunset, a wade in the ocean and fresh salt air.
• If people wave and smile at you, you will know why!
