Slightly Clearer Sound With Retrograde Notification Lighting.
My Echo Dot (4th Generation) Smart Speaker arrived on time and is in good condition. Thank you Amazon (Au) for dispatching my order on the day after ordering and Amazon Logistics for their usual fast, safe and personal delivery.Alexa (Amazon's personal assistant) was invited into our household to primarily help my elderly Mother (Mum). Mum has limited sight, hearing, mobility and is susceptible to falling. So, l thought Alexa would be perfect to tell Mum the time, weather information and play some music for her. Alexa is confined to the rooms Mum spends most of her time in. I'm too old and set in my ways for all the other tasks that Alexa can perform. Initially, I purchased an earlier Echo Dot (3rd Gen). However, Mum found that the sound was muffled with insufficient volume. Later, Amazon (Au) offered me a hefty discount on their latest Echo Dot model (4th Gen - with front firing speaker), so I bought one.The Echo Dot is a lopped sphere with an approximate diameter of 10cm and has an approximate height of 8.5cm. It is powered by a plug back (Australian plug) that can be used in standard power sockets without affecting access to the other sockets. The plug back power lead is equipped with a plug to connect it to the Echo Dot (4th Gen). The lead has an approximate length of 147cm. The Echo Dot (4th Gen) has 2 sockets - one for the plug back power lead and the other for an extension speaker or headphones. Notification lighting is located at the bottom of the lopped orb.Set up was easy because I ticked the box to link this purchase to my Amazon account before tapping the purchase tile. Connecting the Echo Dot (4th Gen) to the internet is accomplished through the Alexa App. Alexa and the Alexa App guides you through this process - Alexa did most of the set-up, for me. Preferences for radio station provider Apps and music streaming services (requires a paid membership) are selected in the Alexa App - YouTube is a good resource. The Echo Dot (4th Gen) is easy to use. Simply ask Alexa to do a task (eg play music) and providing that it has been enabled in the Alexa App, Alexa will comply. Very occasionally, there have been a few "misunderstandings" with Alexa. These mainly concern weather (wrong location) and streaming service playlists (wrong playlist). But, these "misunderstandings" are few and far between. Overall, Alexa has recognised the call and responded to requests, accordingly. However, unless Mum is standing close to the Echo Dot (4th Gen) it still wasn't clear or loud enough, for her. The solution was to Bluetooth pair the Alexa Dot (4th Gen) to a pair of active speakers - done via the Alexa App. Now, clarity and volume aren't an issue. In hindsight, I wouldn't have purchased the Echo Dot (4th Gen) because:▪︎ My older Echo Dot (3rd Gen) is quite capable of Bluetooth pairing with the active speakers.▪︎The notification lighting is smaller and tucked under the Echo Dot (4th Gen). It is not so noticeable as the larger top placed notification lighting of the Echo Dot (3rd Gen) - that must be the reason why I continue to receive all those "keeping up with Alexa" emails. Definitely, a retrograde step if Alexa is to be used as a notification device.▪︎ the Echo Dot (4th Gen) spherical shape is considerably larger and more obtrusive than the lower profile puck shape of the Echo Dot (3rd Gen).▪︎The difference in sound quality is relatively small. Although, the sound from the Echo Dot (4th Gen) is a little clearer than the Echo Dot (3rd Gen). However, both are low fidelity devices.Whilst it is nice to have the current Alexa Dot device, if there is a good deal on an earlier model, I would purchase that and not the current model.
Truth be told, I'm not really into the whole AI thing - however my partner on the other hand can't get enough, so I pay attention to ensure it goes with our room decor and how I can unplug if it decides to go all Wall-E on me, but beyond that it's in the bucket of things I never considered too much about until you catch yourself at some point arguing with the machine not too long after installation... but I digress.
Some quick review notes; Thank god it now comes in something other than black or dark grey. This Arctic White shade is good at two things 1) blending in with other "white" objects around it, without it being too off-white and therefore standing out and 2) it's a white shade that hides dust quite well. I quite like the domed-shape it has been cast in, and looks less squashed than it's sister echo in our bedroom. Set up was quick, easy and took just a couple of minutes, the majority of which was spent locating my own Wifi signal for it's connection when you live in a modern apartment complex... #firstworldproblems
The surprising piece to me in this is the sound quality when I connected my Spotify account to it by accident and not my BOSE Bluetooth speaker, and didn't realise for 2 hours. Amazing value for the price I paid for it - if it never turns my lights on correctly ever when asked, it's OK, I can always cast music to it from my phone so I can navigate my way around the apartment in the dark by listening and looking out for it's soft blue glow.
PS - And if you want to know whether I trusted Alexa with my Credit Card details for shopping Amazon online? No way, are you insane!
Firestick and echo dot has been a life saver for me both at home, and when I'm on the go for work - allowing me to cast what's on my screen on my phone or tablet.
The echo dot it perfect for playing quality clear music, setting alarms, countdowns etc.
Setup was fast and easy - recommend that you have your amazon account up and running first though. I love the quirky routines, like the one that recognises my dogs bark in the morning, and Alexa does a translation ( which of course I set up) its always fun to hear her tell us what he (the dog) is saying asking. love how I can just ask Alexa one of those trivia questions, and she finds an answer, or you suddenly want to hear a song or piece of music and she finds it in seconds. As for linking to other devices such power plugs and tv etc, that's was easy too...its a bit like having a home help who has all the answers...well a lot of them and can play my audible book..right from where I left off and turn the aircon on at the same time. Brilliant!
The best feature of the 4th gen echo Dot is the sound quality. There is an equaliser in the Alexa app so you can set audio for what ever you listen to. Now the bad. The voice recognition is not very sensitive. You have to practically shout at the bloody thing. My Dot 3rd gen in the next room responds before this thing even though your face is right next to it. This is only slightly annoying. My Dot came with the alarm set to sleep mode by default ie the alarm came on for 2 minutes then turned off for 10, repeated for an hour. Not good if listening to news radio. To fix you need to disable sleep mode tap gesture in the Alexa app. Good luck finding this setting. It took ages to find and figure out if it worked or not. Overall now that it is set up I like it a lot.
