About the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT)

The role of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) is to advance the interests of Australia and Australians internationally. This involves strengthening Australia’s security, enhancing Australia’s prosperity, delivering an effective and high-quality overseas aid program, and helping Australian travellers and Australians overseas.

The department provides foreign, trade and development policy advice to the Australian Government. DFAT also works with other Australian government agencies to drive coordination of Australia’s pursuit of global, regional, and bilateral interests.

About the Position

The Public Affairs Manager is responsible for the development and implementation of the Australia Embassy Berlin’s public diplomacy program, including media and social media. This position supervises a small team.

The key responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Coordinate the development and implementation of the Embassy’s public diplomacy program and related activities throughout Germany
  • Supervise a small team of staff responsible for implementing the public diplomacy program
  • Manage the Embassy’s public diplomacy budget
  • Coordinate responses to media enquiries, act as media contact and plan media opportunities, including during high-level visits and special projects
  • Oversee the development and implementation of the Embassy’s social media content
  • Monitor and report on local media coverage of issues of interest to the Australian Government
  • Liaise with internal and external stakeholders, including representing the Embassy at external events and functions
  • Manage and/or oversee Embassy events related to public diplomacy

Qualifications and experience:

  • Tertiary qualifications in a related field
  • Fluent German and English skills (both written and spoken)
  • Proven experience in managing and implementing public programs, including project management, budgeting and marketing
  • Strong networks in the media and/or cultural sectors in Germany
  • Strong ability to develop and maintain productive working relationships with a wide range of stakeholders
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the Australian cultural and/or media landscape and of foreign and trade policy priorities
  • Experience working in or with government is desirable

  1. Ability to contribute to the planning, development and implementation of the Embassy’s Public Diplomacy including online/social media presence, press releases and community engagement projects. 
  2. Established supervision and management skills; ensure objectives are set, prioritised, monitored and met; deliver effective results with limited direction.
  3. Proven record of providing high level stakeholder management, negotiating with influence and building beneficial networks.
  4. Experience in assisting with the coordination of public engagement, cultural and advocacy activities such as Public Diplomacy events and VIP visit programs.
