About the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade

The role of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) is to advance the interests of Australia and Australians internationally. This involves strengthening Australia’s security, enhancing Australia’s prosperity, delivering an effective and high-quality overseas aid program and helping Australian travellers and Australians overseas.

The Department provides foreign, trade and development policy advice to the Australian Government. DFAT also works with other Australian government agencies to drive coordination of Australia’s pursuit of global, regional and bilateral interests.

About the position

The policy officer will be help advance DFAT’s policy interests with the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), its member states - in coordination with other Australian Government agencies based in the Paris Delegation and in Canberra. The position will provide policy, research and administrative support to Australia’s OECD delegation. The position reports to the DFAT First Secretary in their duties.

The key responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to:

  • Undertake research/analysis for the development of policy advice

•     Draft briefing/reports/other written material

•     Represent and advocate Australia’s positions in meetings

•     Act as post focal point on select OECD policy and governance issues

•     Support organisation and of ministerial and official visit programs

•     Support the DFAT OECD delegation including preparation for Council and other OECD meetings.

•     Other duties as required

General Requirements

•     Understanding of the economic and geo-political issues relevant to Australia’s engagement with the OECD

•     High level research and analysis skills

•     Effective representation, negotiation and liaison skills

•     Good judgement, flexibility, collegiality and responsiveness

•     Excellent writing skills for preparation of reports, briefs and internal/external correspondence.

•     Capacity to plan and set priorities, working with limited supervision

•     Excellent English essential.

  1. In-depth knowledge of economic and geo - political issues relevant to Australia’s engagement with the OECD.
  2. Well-developed written and oral communication skills in both English and French (desirable), with a proven ability to prepare written material and to present information in a logical and succinct manner.
  3. Ability to liaise effectively with internal and external stakeholders, demonstrating excellent inter-personal skills, the ability to develop effective stakeholder relations and to build and maintain networks.
  4. High standard of administrative, analytic, research and investigative skills, with proven ability to provide and present accurate and timely information to senior management in an appropriate manner.
  5. Well-developed planning and organisational capabilities, demonstrating the ability to work under pressure, prioritise tasks and work with limited supervision.
