Ocean Confessional is a public ceremony where passersby are invited to reconsider their relationship with the ocean. With the ocean acting as confessor, participants can express and seek forgiveness of past and present environmental transgressions.

The installation has been first held in Vancouver, Canada, and then exhibited in the Design Museum of Helsinki, Finland (Critical Tide).

The confession is mediated through the use of a piece of water-soluble paper, each containing a small amount of calcium-carbonate that helps to slow down the acidification of our oceans.

The work was brought into the community in order to create a more nuanced, open and ongoing dialogue about how our current behaviours are affecting the ocean, and in doing so promote pro-environmental actions.

Ocean Confessional is part of the ongoing effort of Canadian designers, Design Academy Eindhoven graduates Pete and Samhein in examining how the medium of design can be applied towards creating interruptive, participatory spaces for critical reflection, “critical engagement” as they put it. @oceanconfessional
