Garry King featured image

Garry King has extensive experience with working with young people. This experience is the result of having worked as a teacher, youth worker and counsellor and complimented by degrees in welfare and education as well as master’s degrees in counselling and suicidology. He has worked as the youth welfare consultant for the Australian Institute for Suicide Research and Prevention. He was appointed an adjunct senior lecturer Griffith University in 2015 and continues in this role. He is the recipient of a Churchill Fellowship to the USA in 2002 on To investigate youth suicide prevention in an education context. Garry has written a number of books on youth welfare and is a speaker at national and international conferences. He is a peer reviewer for the International Journal of Crisis Intervention and Suicide Prevention. Garry is an invited presenter at the 2018 World Summit on Positive Psychology, mindfulness & Psychotherapy. He was a presenter at the 2019 and 2022 International Society for the Study of Self-Injury conferences in the USA. His most recent book “School Crisis Prevention & Intervention” has been released in the USA. He co-authored a chapter on youth suicide for the School Social Work: Practice, Policy, and Research 9th ed in 2021. Garry continues to work with young people as a school counsellor and at a homelessness service. Garry is both a father and a grandfather.


In 2022, Garry was a recipient of round one of the Trust's Impact Funding program — a new initiative to enhance outcomes of Churchill Fellowships across all industries and sectors. Garry's Impact Funding project was to provide workshops in Gympie and Lismore (significantly impacted by floods) on non-suicidal self injury. About Impact Funding
