Jodie Williams is a sound artist, graphic designer and interdisciplinary researcher who has directed many creative projects in her Norfolk Island homeland. Projects are multi-platform in nature with rich community engagement.
Jodie is a 2013 Churchill Fellow who travelled to the United Kingdom to explore her sound heritage ancestry. Her Churchill Fellowship project focused on raising awareness of the importance of preserving and protecting sound heritage for future generations of the Norfolk Island community. Utilising her professional design skills and experience she continued to research new and innovative ways to express audio storytelling and heritage preservation through sound art. These new ideas and concepts which she gathered during her Fellowship enabled her to express her research creatively, using multimedia formats for storytelling.
Since her Fellowship, Jodie has continued to build on her collections of historical recordings, and the connections between Norfolk Island and its heritage. Jodie regularly hosts tourism presentations to educate and share her digital audio library. She supports the school in raising awareness of the importance of preserving and protecting sound heritage for future generations. She has published books, an online magazine and a comprehensive information website to freely share the island's customs and traditions.
In 2022, Jodie was a recipient of round two of the Trust's Impact Funding program — a new initiative to enhance outcomes of Churchill Fellowships across all industries and sectors. Jodie’s Impact Funding project is to share her sound heritage library with a specific focus upon sound healing platforms. Her project is twofold: (1) She will be working with the Norfolk Island Health and Residential Aged Care Service, supporting aged care patients and those travelling offshore from the island for treatment by supplying music therapy listening devices inclusive of her full heritage audio library collection. (2) Her website will be re-branded and focused on palliative and bereavement care support for patients and families with sound art meditative compositions and music therapy documentation and information. This website will be linked to digital music platforms as an independent artist and will allow her to reach a much wider audience and establish a strong, sustainable online presence within sound healing and music therapy support.
