Michelle Deshong is a Kuku Yulanji woman from North Queensland. She has worked in Indigenous affairs for more than 25 years and held a number of senior leadership and governance roles.
Michelle is a strong advocate for self-determination through self-governance and believes that this is the key to a sustainable future for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
In early 2021 Michelle took up the Managing Director role in her consulting business, Deshong Consulting, where she is leading work in cultural and organisational governance training and development nationally and internationally. Michelle is often asked to speak at conferences and forums on leadership and governance and is seen as a critical thinker in this space.
Michelle is featured in the 2022 podcast series, Voices of power, created by The Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies (AIATSIS), in partnership with the Churchill Trust. The series features Indigenous Churchill Fellows from around Australia, and explores critical stages in the fight for First Nations rights and self-determination and for meaningful representation in places of power.
