Packed schedule to help Finch find his groove

Australia's white-ball captain hopes technique adjustments and a busy international schedule leading into the T20 World Cup will help him recapture his best form

Australia T20 captain Aaron Finch admits he's in the middle of a 'reasonably lean patch' but is confident tweaks to his technique can help him recapture his form before the T20 World Cup.

Finch made scores of 23, 0 and 0 in the three-match ODI series against Pakistan in March-April but capped off the tour with a 55 in the sole T20I.

He then followed that up with 86 runs in five innings for Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL.

But the Victorian was not shying away from his current form when quizzed about it at the launch of Australia's summer schedule.

"It's been a reasonably lean patch," Finch told reporters in Melbourne.

"I've been through that plenty of times in my career. At times, you go through stages where you get a heap runs in a hurry and then go through some lean patches."

'I always had faith': Finch on personal form

The right hander said he's been tinkering with his technique in a bid to recapture his best.

He was out lbw for a duck in consecutive innings in Pakistan.

"I think my technique started to get a little bit too open," Finch said on Monday.

"When you're worried about the ball swinging back in your front pad, you can tend to open up which then has a bit of a flow-on effect.

"I just lost the ability to transfer my weight back through the ball … but (I'm working on) squaring up my technique (through) my hips and shoulders and feet."

It's a familiar situation for Finch.

Leading into the 2019 ODI World Cup, Finch was stuck in a run of low scores during the 2018-19 home summer, scoring just 83 runs in six ODIs against South Africa and India, leading to question marks about his place in the side.

But he found his form on the following tours to India and the UAE (against Pakistan), scoring 608 runs in 10 matches to guarantee his World Cup spot.

And the national skipper is confident the sheer number of scheduled white-ball matches to come will work in his favour.

Following the three T20Is and three ODIs in Sri Lanka in June, Finch has six ODIs and five T20s on home soil prior to the T20 World Cup.

"With such a busy schedule of cricket, there's a lot of time to be able to able to build and I suppose get back into the groove," he said.

"It'd be really nice to try and get some big runs and keep everyone off my back for a little while."

With the exception of Adam Zampa (birth of his first child) and Pat Cummins (rested), the world champions will be at full strength for the T20Is in Sri Lanka, but Finch has admitted the unfamiliar conditions could see the Aussies experiment with their line-up.

"Colombo and Kandy are (such) different surfaces that we've got to be flexible and adaptable and making sure that when we get to the World Cup that we've got plenty of options that we can go with," Finch said.

"Whether we jig our side to have two spinners or go with the three quicks and use the allrounders a bit more … we'll have to be flexible and I think that creates create some great options for us."

Australia fly to Sri Lanka on Wednesday, ahead of their first T20I in Colombo on June 7.
