How results are reported

From 2023, proficiency standards replace the previous reporting of student NAPLAN results using numerical bands and a national minimum standard.

Proficiency standards provide simple and clear information on student achievement in literacy and numeracy as assessed by NAPLAN. They represent a challenging but reasonable expectation of what students at each assessed year level know and can do at the time of NAPLAN testing.

Students’ results are measured against 4 levels of proficiency:

  • exceeding
  • strong
  • developing
  • needs additional support.

School reports

The Student and School Summary Report (SSSR) provides data on how students and year groups performed in NAPLAN tests, including summaries of items administered and student performance by test domain for each year level.

We will email principals and NAPLAN coordinators when ACARA has released the 2024 SSSRs.

NAPLAN student reports for parents/carers

Parents/carers receive two reports showing their child’s achievements in NAPLAN. These are the:

  • Individual Student Report (ISR)
  • Additional Student Report (ASR).

NAPLAN results are a snapshot of a student’s performance at a point in time. They should be considered within the context of ongoing assessment and reporting.

Teachers will have the best insights for parents and carers regarding:

  • the educational progress of students
  • how a student’s result relates to other school-based assessments and classroom learning
  • additional support that may be required.

Individual Student Report

This report shows a student’s results in the key areas of:

  • writing
  • reading
  • conventions of language (spelling, grammar and punctuation)
  • numeracy.

For schools with more than 5 participating students, the school average is also shown.

Additional Student Report

The Additional Student Report (ASR) provides additional information about the skills assessed. This includes:

  • tables providing a description of the questions
  • how the student responded
  • an indication of the relative difficulty of each question.

For the writing test, the ASR provides information about the skills assessed in their written response and the skill level the student demonstrated in their writing.

Distribution of student reports

Schools will be notified of the dates for distribution of the ISR and ASR which schools then distribute to parents/carers.
