Youth Mental Health First Aid Training: Empowering Adults to Support Adolescents

Course Description:

Adolescence is a critical period marked by significant change and development. During this time, mental health problems can first emerge and have a profound impact on a young person's life. These challenges may contribute to declining academic performance, strained relationships, substance use or abuse, and long-lasting effects into adulthood. To address these concerns, TasTAFE and the Tasmanian Government Department of Education, Children and Young People (DECYP) have joined forces to offer the Youth Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) Training.

This comprehensive training program is designed for adults who work, live or care for adolescents, such as teachers, school support staff, parents, sports coaches, community group leaders, and youth workers. The primary goals of the Youth MHFA training are to enhance mental health literacy, facilitate early intervention, and empower participants to provide support to adolescents facing mental health challenges.

The Youth MHFA training follows a blended learning approach and consists of two components:

  1. A self-paced eLearning component provided by Mental Health First Aid Australia. Participants will receive an email with a voucher code and registration instructions to access this material.
  2. An Instructor-led component conducted online, featuring three sessions of 2.5 hours each, including setup time. The sessions will be held over two days during Term 2 of the 2023 school year in Tasmania.

Upon completion of the training, participants will receive a Mental Health First Aid certificate of course completion. Those who successfully pass the online assessment will also earn a three-year accreditation as a Mental Health First Aider.

Please note that participants must attend all three Instructor-led sessions and complete the eLearning component to be eligible for accreditation. No new participants will be admitted after 15 minutes into the presentation.

Don't miss this opportunity to gain valuable skills and knowledge to support the mental well-being of the adolescents in your life. Register today for the Youth Mental Health First Aid Training program, brought to you by TasTAFE, DECYP and Mental Health First Aid Australia.
