The Future Cities Research Hub brings together researchers from across the Faculty of Creative Arts and Industries and the University of Auckland to pursue, develop and disseminate transdisciplinary research focussing on climate change and social, cultural and spatial urban well-being.

Our Research

We investigate the complexities of built environments and their interfaces with natural ecosystems to expand knowledge, instrumentalities and find innovative and effective design approaches and solutions at all scales – from individual buildings to entire neighbourhoods, cities and regions. Our research is informed by inclusive and diverse engagement with Indigenous principles, combining analytical, creative and communication skillsets to address built and natural environment challenges and contribute to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals.

We work with institutions, industry, governmental and non-governmental organisations and communities, educate the next generations of built environment professionals, and advocate for sustainable development.

Our goal is to shape future cities to combat climate change, affirm spatial justice and improve urban well-being through innovative research, planning and sustainable designs that combine principles, creative and data-driven methodologies and instrumentalities.

Our aim is to facilitate and expand a knowledge platform and network of experts to engage with and support industry stakeholders, Māori iwi and other professional organisations, as well as local and central government, to learn and adopt strategies towards the development of more sustainable, inclusive and resilient future cities.
