The SCENZ Group is a statutory body for the assisted dying service.
Responsibilities of the Group include:
- maintaining the list of medical practitioners and psychiatrists involved in providing assisted dying services
- providing contact details for replacement, or independent medical practitioners as part of the service
- providing the contact details for when psychiatrists may be required.
About the SCENZ Group
The members are appointed by the Director-General of Health for a term of two years. Membership includes practising medical practitioners, a practising psychiatrist, a practising pharmacist, and a practising nurse practitioner. The members bring collective experience in the awareness of Te Ao Māori and an understanding of Tikanga Māori; expertise in ethics and law, and the disability sector; and includes representation of the views of patients, whānau and the community.
The SCENZ Group maintains the lists of medical and nurse practitioners and psychiatrists who are willing to deliver parts of the assisted dying services.

Finding a health practitioner on the SCENZ list
If your doctor does not provide assisted dying services, or you do not feel comfortable discussing this with them, you can contact the SCENZ Group through the Assisted Dying team at Te Whatu Ora who will help you find a doctor on the SCENZ list. The clinical advisors will work and coordinate with the SCENZ Group for all requests for practitioners who deliver parts of the assisted dying services. Their contact information is:
