Welcome to the department's interactive reports for infectious diseases and other conditions notifiable in Victoria.
The reports are powered by Microsoft's PowerBI platform, with the underlying data updated daily. The reports let you self-serve the specific data you're after. Remember to check back often as we continue to update and add new reports.
Before you begin, please familiarise yourself with the data caveats.
Using the reports
View full screen - Each report is displayed within a frame. In the bottom right hand corner of the frame is a full screen icon. Clicking on this icon will maximise the report to the full screen size.
Navigation - Click on the left < or right > arrows at the bottom-middle of the page to scroll through the pages in the report or click on the page numbers '1 of 8' to bring up the page menu to navigate directly to the page you're after.
Slicing data - Reports can have combinations of buttons, drop-down lists, tables, date sliders and maps that you can click on to slice and dice the data. Click on items again or the eraser icon to unselect. By default, nothing is selected. Each item on the page is linked, so if you click on an item in one visualisation, the other visualisations will also show the selection.
View figures in charts - Hovering your mouse pointer over a point in the chart will display the count (number) for that point or a pop-up chart displaying more information.
Exploring data - When you move the mouse pointer over a visualisation, such as a chart or table, you'll notice various icons appear:
 | The single downwards facing arrow changes the cursor from 'select' to drill down |
 | Two downwards facing arrows moves you down level-by-level through a hierarchy, such as years to months to weeks |
 | Joined downwards facing arrows drill down to the bottommost level of a hierarchy |
 | The single upwards facing arrow returns you to the top of a hierarchy |
 | The box/arrow icon will make the current item full screen (press [Esc] to return) |
Other icons
 | Allows you to share the item via a URL, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn or email |
 | Makes the Power BI report window full screen (press [Esc] to return) |
Date formats in Power BI - Power BI will use the default date format used by your browser's language/region setting. If the date is displayed in US format (mm/dd/yyyy), you will need to change the relevant setting in your browser. Note – iOS browsers are not able to display non-US dates in the date sliders at this time.
Metadata - Details about the data items are provided below. Additional details may also be provided at the bottom of report pages.
| Data item | Description |
|---|---|
| Event | An event is one case of the notifiable condition for a person. National case definitions are used for each . Total event counts for Victoria also include events where the resident location of the case is unknown or not stated. Cases residing interstate and overseas are not included in these reports. |
| Rate | Rate per 100,000 population. When 'Infinity' is displayed, the rate is not able to be calculated as the estimated resident population is not available for that sex or time period. Note—from July 2019, rate calculation changed from annualised (proportional population for the time of the year) to crude rates (total population for the year) to align with national reporting. |
| ERP | Australian Bureau of Statistics estimated resident population. |
| Dates | Unless specified otherwise, dates are the Event Date. This is the first time the department was notified about an event (case) by a medical practitioner, laboratory or was found by the department through investigation. |
| YTD | The count of events for the year-to-date. YTD-1 is the count of events for the previous year up to the same date, with YTD-2 2 years ago and so on. |
| Notifiable condition | AKA Condition. The infectious disease or other condition notifiable to the department under Public Health and Wellbeing legislation in Victoria. |
| LGA | Local government areas (AKA Local Councils). |
| ABS SA3 | Statistical Areas Level 3 (SA3) are geographical areas built from whole Statistical Areas Level 2 (SA2). They have been designed for the output of regional data, including 2016 Census data. SA3s create a standard framework for the analysis of ABS data at the regional level through clustering groups of SA2s that have similar regional characteristics ( ). |
Accuracy and limitations - The data completeness for specific diseases may be variable and should be interpreted with caution. Data requestors are encouraged to discuss their data request, and the limitations in interpretation of the data with a suitably qualified person within the department. The data reported are only of conditions that have been notified to the department and therefore do not represent a true incidence of the condition. Changes in surveillance scope and practice, diagnostic techniques and reporting may contribute to different case ascertainment over time.
Indigenous status - Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander reports are provided for the priority conditions Dengue virus (locally acquired), Donovanosis, Gonococcal infection, Haemophilus influenzae type b, Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B (newly acquired), Hepatitis C (newly acquired), HIV, Leprosy, Measles, Meningococcal disease (invasive), Pertussis < 5 years, Pneumococcal disease < 5 years, Pneumococcal disease ≥ 50 years, Shigellosis, Syphilis -- congenital, Syphilis -- infectious, and Tuberculosis.
