About the Webinar
Vietnam has the highest installed capacity of solar power in ASEAN, with 16,500MW at the end of 2020. This webinar presents the findings of a recent study on the underlying drivers of Vietnam’s solar boom. Generous feed-in tariffs and supporting policies such as income tax and land lease payment exemptions have been key proximate drivers. The government’s commitment to boosting energy supply and strong public demand for improved air quality have been important underlying drivers of progress. Vietnam’s case provides relevant lessons for other ASEAN member states to realize their significant solar power potential.
About the Speaker and Discussant
Dr Thang Nam Do is a research fellow at the Grand Challenge Program on Zero Carbon Energy for Asia Pacific at The Australian National University. His research interests include renewable energy, climate change and environmental policies in Southeast Asia, Mekong Water-Energy nexus, and sustainable cities in the developing country context. He has worked with the Vietnam Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment as Deputy Director General of International Cooperation, Deputy Director of Environmental Science, and Global Environment Facility (GEF) Operational Focal Point. He was also Chair of Association of Southeast Nations Association (ASEAN) Working Group on Climate Change, and national focal point of ASEAN Working Group on Environmentally Sustainable Cities, Clean Technology Fund, and Water Environment Partnership for Asia.
Dr Paul Burke is an Associate Professor at the Australian National University’s Crawford School of Public Policy. His research focuses on the economics of energy, the environment, transport, and the economies of the Asia-Pacific. He has recently carried out projects on electricity subsidy reforms in Indonesia and on policy mechanisms for uptake of zero-carbon energy. He has published in journals including American Economic Journal: Macroeconomics, Economic Inquiry, Nature Geoscience, Nature Climate Change, and Global Environmental Change. Paul is a project convenor in the ANU Grand Challenge research program Zero-Carbon Energy for the Asia-Pacific at the Australian National University.
