The refreshed Master of Business Administration program at the Singapore campus of James Cook University provides graduates with the skills to succeed in a complex world.

The world of business moves fast. It can often feel difficult to keep up with this evolving landscape and deal with things confidently. In response to this uncertainty and to help professionals stay ahead of the curve, James Cook University (JCU) refreshed its Master of Business Administration (MBA) program in 2020 to add a suite of six new majors at its Singapore campus:

  1. Analytics and Business Solutions
  2. Creative Marketing
  3. Entrepreneurship
  4. Finance
  5. Global Talent Management
  6. MICE, Tourism and Hospitality

Professor Abhishek Bhati, Campus Dean and Head of Learning, Teaching and Student Engagement at JCU in Singapore, says, “In this VUCA (Volatile, Uncertain, Complex and Ambiguous) world, we have to ensure that JCU graduates are equipped with relevant knowledge, skills and attitudes to deliver desirable outcomes in their professional field. We constantly review and update our MBA to ensure that it retains its cutting edge.”

These majors build upon JCU’s existing strengths and allow students to tailor their learning and skills to fit their preferences. What’s more, they provide greater opportunities and support to students in pursuing their desired career paths. In fact, according to Professor Bhati, “market intelligence shows that employers are looking for specific skillsets in management executives,” as the specialised majors prepare graduates for successful jobs in growing fields.

Picking the right major

The Analytics and Business Solutions major equips students with state-of-the-art tools and techniques to sort and analyse data, and the ability to use that data to make valuable organisational impact. This enables businesses to swiftly understand the implications of vast amounts of information and use it to their advantage.

Concurrently, the Creative Marketing major emphasises data-driven creativity and combines marketing knowledge with advanced management and analytical skills. These skills empower students to understand various markets, competitors and more.

Meanwhile, the Entrepreneurship major is designed for budding entrepreneurs keen on creating and growing new businesses. Students will be exposed to the latest tools, techniques and practices to refine and develop fresh ideas.

The Finance major explores core areas of finance, such as financial planning and analysis, foreign exchange risk management, and more. This provides a stepping stone into various fields such as investment banking, hedge fund management, asset management and management accounting.

On the other hand, the Global Talent Management major offers a deep dive into human resources, as well as how to develop and manage talent ethically and responsibly through team building and problem-solving abilities.

Finally, the MICE, Tourism and Hospitality major empowers students with an international vision of the tourism industry and the MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions) sector, along with the skills and knowledge to better manage their work and come up with creative solutions.

The broad range of majors paves the way for more diverse MBA students from JCU. and presents an extraordinary opportunity for these future leaders to lead and mould a new business landscape, enabling businesses to grow in more interesting, new directions.
