In December, we donated $52,000 to StreetSmart Australia's annual DineSmart fundraising initiative - helping grassroots organisations to support people experiencing, or at risk of homelessness. Their programs provide emergency accommodation, food relief, material aid, training and employment, legal support and much more. Collectively, the hospitality industry raised $183,641 for DineSmart in December 2023 - a remarkable amount. This week, donated funds were distributed through StreetSmart Australia’s community grants program to 34 different organisations. The 2023 Wineslinger Awards – the sixth annual edition of the wine guru’s guide to the best haunts in Australia right now – have just been announced. Marion Wine Bar took out the top spot, as voted by around 150 of the country’s leading sommeliers, winemakers, hospitality tastemakers and journalists. On being voted the top Wineslinger in Australia, Penny Vine, who directs the list said, “It’s really incredible to find ourselves among such an amazing group of venues to be honoured with this award. Our new cocktail bar, Apollo Inn, is located in the 1920s neo-renaissance-style building on the corner of Flinders and Hosier Lanes, Melbourne. Taking its cues from the timeless cocktail bars of Europe, it is our ode to the ageless art of the cocktail. Its name references one of Melbourne’s first public houses that once stood on the site of its neighbour, Gimlet at Cavendish House.
