In the spirit of International Day for Women in Maritime today we asked women in maritime what the day means to them. Here's what they had to say: ‘International Day for Women in Maritime means positive change and growth in our industry. We are seeing new job opportunities in all aspects of maritime and logistics — its super exciting!’ ‘Say yes to opportunity and you don’t know where you will end up — there’s such a broad range of experiences to be had.’ Their voices resonate the progress and opportunity for women to enter and shape the maritime industry. The theme of International Day for Women in Maritime this year is ‘Safe Horizons: Women Shaping the Future of Maritime Safety’. Last week, we collaborated towards increased cybersecurity and cyber resilience in the maritime sector at the Global Maritime Transportation System Cybersecurity Symposium 2024 in London. Hosted by the United Kingdom Department for Transport, the event united government representatives, maritime shipping and ports industries, cybersecurity experts, non-government organisations, and academia from across the globe. As momentum towards digitalisation gathers pace, so does our work to fortify the maritime sector against digital threats. Australia’s committed delegation included Lauren Val (left) and Crystal Fox (right) from the Department of Home Affairs and Julius Moeller (centre) from AMSA. On watch, experience counts. The need to have someone ‘on watch’ when a vessel is at anchor is an important operational risk assessment consideration. Environmental factors like wind and tidal changes, surroundings, and proximity to other vessels are all important factors to consider when determining if a continuous anchor watch is required. To perform an anchor watch, a person must hold appropriate certification or be supervised by someone else who does. AMSA and the Australian Transport Safety Bureau are encouraging general and recreational aircraft owners to take up the ADS-B rebate program before it closes on 31 May 2024. AMSA’s Joint Rescue Coordination Centre can use a last known ADS-B position to refine a distress location, if an aircraft is in distress, improving our ability to locate and rescue survivors. Aircraft owners could be eligible for up to a 50% rebate on the purchase of a potentially life-saving ADS-B installation, up to $5,000. Learn more about the grant at: https://ow.ly/PgAi50RhMKO

AMSA was delighted to sponsor and present the Environment Award to Gary Ryan at last week's Victorian Seafood Industry Awards 2024 in Melbourne. Gary, a commercial fisher in Warrnambool, won the award for his work developing a long-term solution to the problem of microplastics from lobster fishing equipment, which can contribute to waste building up in our oceans. Gary began designing and building plastic-free lobster pots that replace plastic nets with steel. He has also organised beach clean-up days along remote sections of Victoria’s southwest coast. Protection of the marine environment is an important part of our work at AMSA. We are responsible for both casualty response and pollution prevention from vessel operations.
