Have we over-valued privacy to the detriment of social interaction and a sense of community? Indigenous thinking would suggest we have. ‘The home according to Australian First Peoples’ explores how First Nations cultural values and kinship structures can apply to modern living typologies—taking an Indigenous lens on the Housing SEPP to meet the social requirements of people and aspirations of developers in brackish space. Read: https://lnkd.in/gM69CwCH Co-authored by Nguluway DesignInc Managing Director, Craig Kerslake Wiradjuri Nation and DesignInc Sydney Principal, Lynne Hancock. #DesigningfromCountry #Residential #AffordableHousing #Community #FirstNations #ThoughtLeadership #HousingSEPP

First Nations design principles and sustainability go hand-in-hand, together improving relationships between people and nature to create more resilient, inclusive societies.     Nguluway DesignInc Managing Director, Craig Kerslake Wiradjuri Nation, said:   "Sustainable design and Designing from Country are extremely complimentary. While sustainable design is the business of creating environmentally-responsive buildings, places, precincts—Designing with Country focuses on the drivers that compel us to act sustainably in the first place. Relationships. Specifically relationships between humanity and nature. The Indigenous way of seeing the world intuitively builds in sustainability due to those cultural systems which declare that we are related to nature, a part of it. Through this Country-centric mindset, we intuitively look after it—like you would a family member. When architects design from this premise, we embed the Indigenous narrative of relationships as the highest priority. When people are intrinsically linked to place, they intuitively care for it.”   Thanks for stopping by, Atelier Ten—it’s always a pleasure to share stories and ideas as part of our industry’s pursuit of reconciliation and environmental stewardship.   + Featuring Atelier Ten, Nguluway DesignInc and DesignInc Sydney  + Catering by Native Foodways   #NowMoreThanEver #NationalReconcilationWeek #B2B #ThoughtLeadership #Architecture #Design #Landscape #Interiors Joyce Lim Tom Fletcher Ian Armstrong Paul Stoller Lucy Marsland Jennifer Elias Stewart Monti Davis Demillo

Unanderra Station is situated in an outer suburb of Wollongong on Dharawal Country. Over the last few decades, the natural beauty of the location has become overlooked—instead, busy arterial roads and swathes of light industrial development have come to dominate the perception of the area. Through Nguluway DesignInc’s Designing from Country approach, our team connected with Traditional Custodians from the beginning of the design process—ensuring local stories are integrated throughout the landscape, architecture and with the curation of community artworks. Built form was viewed as an opportunity to celebrate the local Aboriginal culture and their deep connection to people and place. The station spine draws-in the Illawarra Escarpment. Sandstone crags, scarps, waterfalls and bushland are echoed in the forms, materials and colours of the design. Embracing local community group Coomaditchie’s ‘Two River Story,’ the access bridge becomes part of the river, linking each together like the union of community groups. While the public art expresses Dharawal themes, it does so under the proviso that these stories are only shared by appropriate Elders. Subtle prompts facilitate the old stories—a symbol that points towards Mount Keira for the women’s story, and an open-ended bridge that takes your view towards Mount Kembla for the men’s story. Unanderra Station was upgraded as part of the NSW-wide Transport Access Program tasked with making our state’s public transport network more universal than ever. We're proud to share that PHIVE has been named the winner of the Australian Library and Information Association's (ALIA) Library Design Award. City of Parramatta Lord Mayor Cr Pierre Esber said: "PHIVE is our community’s urban living room and has seen more than 800,000 people walk through the doors since the opening in September 2022 to either borrow a book, study or take part in our health and wellness, creative arts and school holiday programs." A community landmark, PHIVE remains true to its identity as a place where locals and visitors meet, discover, learn and share. Congratulations to City of Parramatta and the wider project team consisting of Lacoste+Stevenson Architects and Manuelle Gautrand Architecture. In this disruptive technological era, the traditional university lab has evolved. This is especially true for the likes of University of Canberra’s Robotics and IoT Engineering Facility and UNSW’s Sunswift Garage. While expectations on institutions have too evolved, their core objective has not: shape industry-ready engineering, design and technology professionals tasked who'll solve problems and change the world as we know it. Modern universities have opened the door to partner with industry to further the reach, impact or opportunity for students to achieve greatness. Whether it’s sustainable travel, robotics, AI, bioengineering, medical science, aeronautics—these spaces foster collaboration, hand-on learning, and encourage experimentation that continually push the boundaries of knowledge. How many of the world’s greatest minds started their journey in an environment like this? And how many more will emerge as our universities innovate? Parramatta Town Hall resembles a city’s collective shift in sustainability. City of Parramatta Council’s electricity supply is powered by 100% renewable energy, featuring solar PV array on the Southern Terrace roof. Up to 90% of construction waste was recycled, including the reuse of wide timber floors and heritage bricks throughout the building and new masonry areas. The design features rainwater harvesting for reuse in irrigation and toilet flushing. Both Parramatta Town Hall and the neighbouring PHIVE have been fitted with dual pipework anticipating connection to the precinct recycled water scheme that will be commissioned in the near future. Materiality, namely within the new public spaces fronting the Public Square, calls upon durability to ensure longevity in its usage. Proudly, Parramatta Town Hall has been shortlisted in the 2024 National Trust Heritage Awards. Climate-responsive design is central to Redfern Station’s upgrade. Materials chosen for the concourse and stair are durable, providing protection to commuters while allowing for natural air flow. Water Sensitive Urban Design (WSUD) is embedded in a public domain design that transforms Little Eveleigh Street into a shared zone—a wide, landscaped thoroughfare—which replaces asphalt footpaths with planting beds and raingardens to help filter stormwater runoff. Combined, the improved streetscape, additional landscaping, paving treatments and new canopy trees provide improved amenity to both private residents and pedestrians while helping alleviate the impacts of urban heat. House-proud. A story of stewardship, our new studio at 126 Phillip Street was a chance for us to shape a studio bound intrinsically to our values, each other and our clients. Developed in collaboration with Nguluway DesignInc, the concept is deeply informed by ‘brackish space’—the flow of sweet and salt water across Country—ultimately shaping our workplace as a nexus of connection, exchange and innovation. A great home is a green one. While the average office fitout equates to approximately 1,800kg of CO2 per square metre, our fitout resulted in an estimated 17kg of CO2 emissions per square metre. Nathan Humphries, Principal Interior Design, said: “We’ve created a new home to showcase our practice to our clients, our collaborators and community The design has a transparency and openness, intentionally focused around our communal space, providing a social heart and central focal point of connection.” More: https://lnkd.in/gqycDAAp Collaborators: Nguluway DesignInc, DLG Shape Photography: Luc Remond #Commercial #Office #InteriorDesign #AdaptiveReuse #Sustainability #Architecture #Sydney
