🎒🌳🔥 NEW RESEARCH 🔥🌳 🏫 Over the last 18 months or so, we have been collaborating with Upwey High School in the Dandenong Ranges to design an evidence-based framework for student participation in the development and implementation of school bushfire plans. Derived from a participatory action research process that centres the views and experiences of students, school staff and local emergency managers, our emergent framework includes three priorities for action and 12 core tasks for effective implementation: PRIORITY 1: BUILD KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING 1.1. Develop curriculum-aligned teaching and learning resources 1.2. Increase student involvement in emergency drills and exercises 1.3 Engage students as educators 1.4 Explore opportunities for co-curricular activities PRIORITY 2: PROMOTE VOICE, AGENCY AND LEADERSHIP 2.1. Position students as genuine partners in school bushfire planning 2.2. Create time and space for students to form their views 2.3. Embed mechanisms for students to share their views with decision-makers 2.4. Establish leadership positions for students PRIORITY 3: SUPPORT INNOVATION AND CHANGE 3.1. Establish and strengthen collaborative partnerships 3.2. Ensure transparency and accountability in decision-making 3.3. Invest in evaluation and research 3.4. Share learning and celebrate success If you are looking for evidence-based, meaningful ways to involve children and young people as genuine participants in bushfire risk management in your jurisdiction, check out the report and please free to get in touch with our research team (contact details in the front matter). Report: https://lnkd.in/gRzycMqf Researchers: Briony Towers, Erica Kuligowski, Billy Tusker Haworth Huge thanks to the Lord Mayor's Charitable Foundation for funding this project.

Best decision I ever made was leaving academia to start Leadrrr with Billy Tusker Haworth. It's been a very steep learning curve and we are so grateful to everyone who has supported us and our work. We have some good things brewing. More soon!

It's always a treat to work with Simon Collingwood from 360 Entertainment on new content for the Triple Zero Kids Challenge online game. This time around we teamed up with the NSW State Emergency Service to develop interactive quests and lesson plans for storm, tsunami and flood. These new resources can all be accessed on the NSW SES website https://lnkd.in/gGM7ft9p We have also tailored them for a national audience and added them to the Australian Triple Zero Kids Challenge website https://lnkd.in/gPtrp-Zd

Leadrrr designed and delivered a workshop at the Lake Macquarie GLAM (Galleries, Libraries, Archives and Museums) creative industries symposium on Risk and Recovery. The workshop, delivered to a diverse audience of arts administrators, practitioners, curators, council members, and other community group representatives in the Lake Macquarie region, focused on an introduction to mapping in disaster contexts for creative communities, including mapping practices of geographic information systems (GIS), counter cartographies, and participatory mapping (e.g., drawing on paper maps together). 🙂 🗺 🎨 🔥 https://lnkd.in/g6WJxtes

Excited to commence delivery of the very first NSW Rural Fire Service Project Firestorm teacher professional development course this week. Over the next few months, we will be taking this NESA accredited course to Stage 3 (Grade 5/6) teachers across NSW. The response from teachers so far has been fantastic and demonstrates a high level of interest in authentic learning for bushfire resilience. 🌳🔥 We still have spots available in some locations. If you know a Stage 3 teacher or school leader in NSW, please let them know about this unique professional development opportunity. Teachers can register their interest via the link below. https://lnkd.in/gwgqJEqQ
