Recovering valuable metals for the circular economy

About us

Mint Innovation, a New Zealand cleantech company, has scaled biological processes that recover valuable metals from waste. Our first process is a unique biometallurgical approach to recover metals from electronic scrap. A key aspect of the Mint process is the use of proprietary microbes that are selective for specific metals. Combined with the advantages of low-cost green chemistry, we aim to make it viable, both economically and environmentally, to capture value from e-waste near its point of collection.

Do you have a drawer of old electronics that’s been collecting dust?    We are all guilty of it. Old electronics are not only hard to part with because we know how valuable they are. We are also somewhat aware of the toxic nature of these devices, so it can be difficult to know what to do with them.     And as global e-waste also continues to pile up each year, the need for us to take collective action is more urgent than ever.     This is why we’re so excited to launch Get e-Wise, an initiative designed to help drive awareness and action on how to deal with e-waste sustainably.     Check it out below and help us spread the word to family, friends, local schools, and organisations.👇   We have more resources and content coming soon so stay updated and let’s create change together!    #GeteWise https://lnkd.in/gcvRtYde

It takes a collective to make global change! 🌏   Whilst we’re making steady progress in pioneering technology to recover important metals from e-waste and other waste streams, we can’t solve the world’s growing e-waste problem alone.     To assist us in our mission of helping to restore the planet, we need a strong community of advocates to help us spread awareness and create impact. We’ve started doing this already through events and outreach with local schools and organisations, however we’re committed to taking this to the next level.     With that said, we’re excited to share that we’ll be launching a new initiative shortly to help us create a movement and accelerate change.    Keep an eye out on our socials and website for updates! 👀   In the meantime, read about the presentation and collection drive event we ran with Bucklands Beach Intermediate last year. #Sustainability #EWaste https://lnkd.in/g5gyg-3j

Today, we celebrate Earth Day 🌱   Earth Day Initiative is grounded in the idea that each one of us, whether we’re an individual, business or national government, has the power to create change and play a role in tackling global environmental issues.   Although change won't happen by committing just one day a year, Earth Day is an opportunity to be reinspired and reignite our drive to empower change.   For Mint, today is a reminder that what we do has the potential to create incredible impact at scale. Protecting the earth doesn't just stop at our technology either. As a business, we always aim to make sustainable choices where possible.   Last week, we started packing up our old office which has been bursting at the seams, and have officially made the move into our new HQ. In the design of this new space, we wanted to use as many sustainable or recycled materials as possible, including:   🧱 saveBOARD lining the walls of our entryway. saveBOARD aims to create a circular economy through low-carbon building materials made of recycled packaging waste. A business we're stoked to support! ♻️ Recycled carpet in all our meeting rooms. 🛋️ Upcycled office furniture, appliances and fittings. 🔨 Handmade coffee table and leaner.   These are minor decisions in the grand scheme of protecting our planet, but it's small actions like this that add up and make a difference!

A few weeks ago, we hosted New Zealand Hon Andrew Bayly at our Sydney e-waste biorefinery.     It’s great to have opportunities like this to share our story and highlight the contributions of our work on the path to net zero.      It's encouraging to know that the Government of New Zealand is interested in understanding how to support the scaling of businesses, like Mint, to commercialise technology that is both environmentally and economically viable.    In addition to building sustainable technology to better process e-waste, ensuring ease of access to our services and creating ways to streamline operations for our partners are key in the development of our solutions.     Read more about Hon Andrew Bayly's visit and how Mint is supporting local recycling businesses across Australia below. #NetZero #Sustainability #EWaste

According to the latest UN Global E-waste Monitor, there was a record 62 billion kgs of e-waste generated globally in 2022, with an estimated $91 billion worth of metals, including $15 billion of gold.   With population growth, the need and demand for electronics isn't going to slow anytime soon. We need sustainable, circular solutions to recover critical metals needed to build future technology.    If you're an Australian recycler that's already doing a good job of collecting e-waste, we'd love to work with you to process your e-waste locally using low-carbon technology, giving you a quicker return without the need to ship it offshore. With our biorefinery in Sydney, we can process about 20% of the PCB waste collected annually across Australia, meaning we can return circular, green metals back to the economy.    Partner with us to create value from e-waste streams in a profitable, convenient and sustainable way. It's always an honour to attend global events addressing pressing climate issues - and then being able to share those learnings forward!    Our Head of Strategy and CFO, Colum Rice recently attended the McKinsey & Company’s Green Business Building Summit and is doing exactly this. Check out his article below highlighting his insights around early scalability, building an ecosystem and the 'triple mission' decarbonisation.     #GBB24 #Decarbonisation #Sustainability #netzero

Helping Mint Innovation deliver low carbon gold & critical metals to decarbonise industrial supply chains at true global scale

Last week I had the opportunity to represent Mint Innovation at McKinsey’s Green Business Building Summit in Berlin. It was inspiring to be in a room with executives, entrepreneurs, investors, founders and project developers who are not just aligned around a Net Zero target but sharing experiences, working and collaborating on the critical work of “hyperscaling” the technologies that are needed to deliver Net Zero.      Having been privileged to attend the event I've put together this summary of my key takeaways in the hope that it can sparking further conversation around rapidly deploying and scaling cleantech. Please have a read.    #GBB24 #WinGreenAndGrow
