‘Privacy is no longer the preserve of the IT nerds, or the legal team, but needs to be mainstreamed from the board room to the lunch room.’ Privacy Commissioner Carly Kind spoke about the lifecycle of privacy by design at the Privacy by Design Awards last night, hosted by CyberCX and the Tech Council of Australia. She also discussed the need for privacy reform and how organisations can power up privacy ahead of changes. The event was opened by Attorney-General Mark Dreyfus, who shared the Australian Government will bring forward legislation in August to overhaul the Privacy Act to give Australians greater control and transparency over their personal information. Power up the security of personal information in your business by using the right tools and guarding against known and emerging threats. Start with these 3 steps: 🟩 Guard against impersonation: Access to customer accounts through credential stuffing and compromised staff access are key issues to look out for. Strengthen identity management and authentication steps. 🟩 Use the right tools: Have up-to-date privacy management and data breach response plans, and make use of our guidance and tools. Use cyber security mitigation strategies. 🟩 Lock the doors: Assume human error will occur and design for it. And choose wisely when outsourcing the handling of personal information to service providers and contractors. Make sure the right security measures are in place. #PAW2024 #PrivacyAwarenessWeek

Privacy Awareness Week is just around the corner. The annual campaign puts a spotlight on privacy and the importance of protecting personal information. This year’s theme focuses on privacy and technology and the key principles of transparency, accountability and security. In calling on organisations to help us power up privacy, Privacy Commissioner Carly Kind said: ‘While individuals can all do our bit by having sound personal data practices, the biggest onus is on businesses and other organisations that hold data to make the right decisions to adequately protect and respect it, and not collect or keep what is not needed. ‘Now is the time for all actors in the digital ecosystem to power up their privacy. ‘Doing so will be good for individuals, and good for business.’ Power up your privacy by visiting paw.gov.au #PAW2024 #PrivacyAwarenessWeek
