Our new video series highlights the importance of protecting ourselves and our communities from measles. We partnered with Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora to produce three animated videos on measles and the Measles, Mumps and Rubella (MMR) vaccination. The videos explain what measles is, how to protect yourself from the disease and where you can access reliable health information. 🔹🔸These videos are available in 21 different languages🔸🔹 Measles is a highly contagious disease. It can easily spread among people and can cause serious illness and sometimes death. The best protection against measles is the MMR vaccination. • We wish all New Zealand’s African communities and everyone else who is celebrating a very wonderful Africa Day! Africa Day recognises the founding of the Organisation of African Unity (later to become African Union) on May 25, 1963. It is a time for Africans in the continent and those throughout the world to unite, and celebrate their culture, cuisine and communities. Enjoy the festivities!

    • Social tile with words 'Happy Africa Day!' in yellow writing. A colourful looping logo runs across the top of the tile. An image of the African continent and fireworks in a range of colours are displayed in the centre of the tile. A colourful African pattern is visible in the background.

Every day our youth do amazing things. They present new ideas and perspectives, challenge other’s thinking, and urge everyone to do better – for each other and for this world 🌏. We are proud of New Zealand’s youth and are excited to see how they will shape Aotearoa in the future. As the end of Youth Week nears, we hope young people from New Zealand’s ethnic communities have enjoyed the various events that mark this special occasion. This is a time to celebrate our youth’s achievements and thank them for their contributions👍🏽.

  • The Race Unity Poster Competition, a significant event in fostering a culture of diversity and unity, was beautifully celebrated by the Waimakariri District Council and local communities for the second year. Partially funded by our Ethnic Communities Development Fund (ECDF), this year’s event witnessed a surge in participation—a gratifying 209 entries representing 15 schools, surpassing the previous year’s record. One of the most inspiring aspects of this year’s competition was the remarkable engagement from local schools and businesses. Local businesses got behind the project through partnerships between communities and the private sector, including prizes and contributions towards afternoon tea at the prizegiving ceremony. Such proactive involvement underscores the importance of initiatives like this competition in nurturing a culture of appreciation for diversity in New Zealand. • We stand in solidarity with all those taking a stance against bullying as we recognise Pink Shirt Day today. Pink Shirt Day Aotearoa is a time for the country to unite against bullying, celebrate diversity and encourage kindness and inclusion. These are really important values to us at the Ministry for Ethnic Communities 💗. Today is also the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia. We are proud to support all our ethnic communities and will continue to strive for a New Zealand where everyone feels a sense of belonging 👩🏾 👴🏼 👶🏿👧🏻 🌈.
