March 2020 Fundraising income (excluding bequests) down 14% Based on detailed data supplied by 38 charities with a combined annual income of over $750m we see that the median decline for the month of March 2020, excluding volatile bequest income, compared to March 2019 was 14% on a median per charity basis and 9% on a total income basis. As the chart illustrates, events were most adversely impacted, down 43%, followed by more modest changes for major donors (15%) and direct marketing (9%). Charities were provisioning for a 25% decline in income and were seeking to reduce costs by the same amount (slightly lower for salaries). 63% of charities had a lower March in 2020 than 2019 but had been tracking better on a year to date basis with median non bequest income up 2% and 57% enjoying increased revenue.
