Movement Strategies is in attendance at the Society of Fire Protection Engineers (SFPE) Fire Safety Conference & Expo on Performance-Based Design in Copenhagen, 17 – 19 April. Our Research Technical Lead, Prof. Steve Gwynne is presenting today his research on the use of simulation tools to quantify the impact of changes in prescriptive guidance on evacuation performance of multi-occupancy residential buildings in the UK. Steve co-authored the research paper, “The role of trust in guidance and guidance creators in resident response to fire incidents in high-rise residential buildings”, which is available on ScienceDirect here: https://lnkd.in/eKaaiftH.

Movement Strategies recently had a research paper published on the important work delivered to support the national pandemic response strategy.    Our team observed 21 public events as part of the UK Government's Events Research Programme to examine crowd behaviour (given interventions to reduce Covid transmission), to inform government decision-making regarding event reopening. Professor Steve Gwynne will be headlining a webinar hosted by the Danish Society of Engineers (IDA) on 24 January 2024 titled 'Understanding and modelling evacuation from fire'. The webinar will explore the nuanced aspects of fire evacuations from real-world case studies to dispel evacuation myths and provide insights into human behaviour during fire emergencies. Steve will examine the conceptual and empirical evidence supporting evacuation dynamics, with a focus on translating this knowledge into effective modelling practices. He will also engage the audience in an empathy test to appreciate the evacuee perspective, contributing to a sophisticated understanding of evacuation processes and outcomes. Steve is Movement Strategies’ Research Lead and has over 25 years of experience in pedestrian dynamics, human behaviour in fire and evacuation modelling.
