We had another wonderful, empowering day to encourage cervical screening and to celebrate women in Oamaru on Saturday. The Pink Day was hosted by Oamaru Pacific Island Community Group (OPICG) with thanks to other partners Te Whatu Ora Southern and Breast Screening Southern. As well as the presentations, cervical screening, HPV swabbing, immunisations and bookings for breast screening were available on the day. We also had a good discussion on women’s health including menopause. Similar to Invercargill earlier in the year at PIACT, this was a day to acknowledge Pasifika women and their role and their work, share knowledge about screening and the new self-swab, and pamper them with massage, facials, nails, gift vouchers. WellSouth is also aiming to have pharmacist and dietician clinics in OPICG in the future, so watch this space. Hana Halalele QSM

Why You Need to Take Proactive Health Measures. Aisha was passing by and found a group of community women discussing how one of them had just died, but they were baffled about what had killed her. Dear #LinkedIn fam, early detection can make all the difference. January is Cervical Cancer Awareness Month 📢 Here are 8 simple ways you and your loved ones can reduce the risk of cervical cancer: 1. Regular Screening: Do routine Pap smears and HPV tests. Early detection is vital. 2. Eat well nourished meals, stay physically active, and achieve a healthy weight. 3. Practice Safe Sex: Use protection and consider taking the HPV vaccine (suitable for ages 12 and above). 4. Quit Smoking: Smoking is linked to an increased risk of cervical cancer. Say no to smoking and create a smoke-free environment. 5. Schedule Routine Medical Check-ups: Early detection and timely intervention save lives. 6. Vaccinate Against HPV: It's a powerful preventive measure. 7. Manage Your Stress. 8. Be Knowledgeable about Cervical Cancer Risk Factors and Symptoms (I share them in the comments). A few weeks ago Spinal Muscular Atrophy UK were invited to film with the UK Newborn Screening Collaborative to highlight the need for more rare diseases to be included on the new-born screening programme also known as the heel prick test which all babies receive after 5 days of being born. It's one of our top priorities for SMA to be included on the newborn screening programme especially with the availability of several drug treatments through the NHS. We welcomed the recent news that the UK newborn screening committee has recommended that plans for a UK wide pilot should take place for SMA in tandem with the development of an economic model. However, although this isn't a recommendation to start screening for SMA, the pilot will allow the committee to gather more information and make a decision faster. Until that decision is made, we will do everything we can for SMA to be included on the heel prick test with all our stakeholders and partners. #supporting #informing #advocating #smaawarenessmonth #iamunique Lucy de'Lemos MCIOF (Dip) Portia Thorman https://lnkd.in/eRjZmG-R

We're busy women in business but we musn't overlook getting our smears. Especially in menopause. Why? In menopause many things change in our reproductive system and making sure all parts of our reproductive health is measured and monitored is key. It's cervical cancer prevention week this week. So let's make that date a firm fixture to get the smear test you may have been putting off. Spread the word, ladies and get involved this week. Tag your busiest friends, the ones who wouldn't dare miss a business meeting but let their screenings slide. Talk to your HR teams, call your friends and family, write it on the whiteboard. And share this post with as many women as you can to prompt them to get their smear test booked! It's a small step, a simple re-share but one that could change everything. #cervicalcancerprevention #menopause #menopausesupport
