They say that as you get older, certain things get bigger and others get smaller. Well, a new career opportunity has presented itself that I couldn’t resist and have decided that the miles from my old home town of Desborough on the Midland Main Line, for my new role will increase from 100 to 11,850. Meanwhile getting smaller from 4’8 1/2 to 3’6” is the track gauge of the Auckland rail network, as I join Auckland One Rail (AOR) as their Chief Operating Officer. (1435mm to 1067mm) I have been very choosy as to the role that I wanted and I believe that after 30 plus years in the industry, why shouldn’t I be? I am extremely impressed by what is happening in Auckland, through Auckland Transport and I’m sure in collaboration with colleagues at KiwiRail, AOR will be hugely successful moving forward. I did start to write out some of the projects underway and how they are going to influence travel in the City and surrounds, but they are lengthy and each deserve their own write ups, but all exciting nonetheless. So, after lengthy consultations with my internal stakeholders we are on the move in February. And those internal stakeholders are incredibly important to me as they are as involved in my career as anyone can be. So we go with all of us, including plane and train mad 13 and 10yr olds, looking forward to a new adventure. After becoming a fellow of both the CIRO | Chartered Institution of Railway Operators and CILT (UK) in the last year, I’ll also be looking forward to getting more involved with both organisations locally, and spreading the work and benefits of each within Australasia. So after time back in the UK with Chiltern Railways , Resonate and Network Rail, it’s farewell, but a big Kia Ora to Auckland and future colleagues. Needless to say I’m sure there will be regular updates as I’ve been a little lax in posting while sorting out this exciting next step. #auckland #newzealand #resonate #networkrail #ciro #cilt
