- To get you moving with goal setting and managing performance, let me encourage you to do two things. First, consider having an audit type of conversation with your team. The way you see this topic and how you judge your performance is likely different than how the team sees things. That's normal. So in the spirit of continuous improvement, chat with them. See if you can identify some issue you all feel you can do better. It might have to do with creating goals or some aspect of accountability. You'll never know what they're thinking until you ask and allow them to have a voice in the conversation. Finally, I love to remind leaders that, while mentors are wonderful, you're missing out on a great developmental resource if you don't partner with a peer to talk about these issues. If you can find a person of similar experience dealing with somewhat similar issues, that's golden. It's just like two good friends who go jogging together to push each other.
