I find driving sustainability in my company to be an exciting challenge, despite the lack of progress at the country level in Kazakhstan. Although the country may be slow to switch to renewable energy and only a mere 11.5% of companies are using it, I believe that change is possible. I am sharing this because I know that to affect change, we must work at a country level, and that means changing the game within the government. It's a challenging process, but I am confident in my ability to push for change. If not now, then when? Exciting news in the world of sustainable energy! The European Investment Bank (EIB) has given the green light for a significant step towards a greener future. They've approved financing of up to €1.7 billion for the construction of approximately 120 photovoltaic plants in Spain, Italy, and Portugal. What's particularly noteworthy is that over a third of the installed capacity will be situated in less developed regions, creating economic opportunities with the potential to uplift local communities. The National Youth Energy Caucus Kenya - Energy chapter (NYCK) held a very interactive workshop on the opportunities in the energy sector with significant focus on Renewable energy. In alignment with SDG 7 towards providing Sustainable Energy for all (SEforAll). Sustainability in the solar industry was questioned in regards to waste disposal after the efficiency lifespan depletion of major components in the industry such as batteries and the PV modules. How do we improve PV modules efficiency percentages to ensure that we can harvest much more power. After 25 yrs or so of using PV modules we'll need to 'dispose' the inefficient products. With SDG 7 in mind we've been looking at Hydrogen as the new frontier in sustainable and renewable energy solutions . The Kenya Hydrogen roadmap outlines the proposed recommendations that are going to ensure that we have a more sustainable planet. With proper implementation of the hydrogen solution we can have multiple solutions ranging from Commercial and Industrial ( C& I) solutions, green cooking, fuel cell application in E- mobility as well as farm input technology by use of hydrogen in fertilizer production ensuring food security while getting sufficient and reliable energy at the same time. The hydrogen solution comes with a technical aspect that needs to be addressed to ensure safety given that hydrogen is highly combustible. Youth involvement in sustainable energy solutions and discussions is the way to go in a bid to ensure that the discussion is long term and gains traction given that Africa is the youngest planet. The Transformative Impact of Renewable Energy on the Sustainable Development Goals This Oct 2023 article in McKinsey Sustainability (see below) provides estimates of significant growth in renewable energy capacity in Africa by 2050. 1. Wind capacity is expected to grow 35x from 12 GW 2. Solar capacity to grow 100x from 15 GW 3. Green hydrogen to reach 70 million metric tons production 4. Hydropower to grow 4x from the current 45 GW capacity. In the realm of international development, the strategic deployment of renewable energy investments stands as a cornerstone for progress across multiple Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Many of the SDGs will benefit from investment in renewable energy. Three are: Eradicating Poverty (SDG 1): Renewable energy initiatives catalyze economic empowerment at the grassroots level. By providing affordable and accessible energy, these projects ignite local enterprise and employment opportunities, lifting communities out of poverty. Fostering Economic Prosperity (SDG 8): The green energy sector is a burgeoning frontier for innovation and sustainable economic expansion. Investment in renewables underpins a resilient infrastructure, propelling industries forward while mitigating environmental degradation. Bridging the Inequality Divide (SDG 10): The democratisation of energy through renewables is a potent equalizer. By leveling the playing field, it ensures that the benefits of modern energy services permeate all strata of society, narrowing the chasm of global inequality. In essence, the infusion of capital into renewable energy is not merely an environmental imperative but a multifaceted strategy that promises a more equitable and prosperous future for us all.

The TEA at SUNRISE project, led by Swansea University, aims to enhance the production and deployment of solar PV in developing regions such as Africa, Asia, and the Indo-Pacific. This initiative intends to create manufacturing hubs for efficient, low-cost PV modules, with a focus on aligning production to areas abundant in solar energy. Besides, it aims to transition energy access ethically, maintaining a strong emphasis on PV technologies being developed for a circular economy, minimising waste and the use of critical materials. The predominant silicon module-based solar market requires significant resources and upfront investment. TEA at SUNRISE aims to focus on novel solar materials, fostering sustainable business models, and empowering local supply chains. By joining hands with local stakeholders, it aims to augment knowledge exchange and hasten sustainable photovoltaic manufacturing development at a local level, stimulating economic progress while limiting environmental impact.
