ASRC Solidarity--Colleagues with Lived Experience

We want the ASRC to practice its organisational values and give staff with lived experience the job security they deserve.

Why is this important?

Too many workers with lived experience of being a refugee or asylum-seeker are employed on insecure contracts across the ASRC.

The ASU has recently written a letter to ASRC Management drawing attention to the treatment of three paralegals in the legal centre. These workers all have lived experience of being a refugee. They know first-hand the trauma and stress that comes with having a precarious legal status. The ASRC has been employing these workers on rolling short term contracts for over 1.5 years. They do not find out if their contract will be extended until the very last minute. This kind of job insecurity is contrary to everything the ASRC stands for.

Its great to see staff at the ASRC come together and support their colleagues!

We have received feedback that there are many other workers with lived experience that are employed precariously at the ASRC beyond the three paralegals in the legal centre. We would like to make it clear that our message of solidarity extends to all staff in similar conditions.

If you would like to show your support for a particular group of workers at the ASRC, feel free to write something in the 'Tell others why you signed' box and your comments will be sent to Management.
