Cricket: New NZ Cricket boss Scott Weenink faces Blackcaps player availability issues

Incoming NZ Cricket chief executive Scott Weenink concedes he's taking over at a time when player retention is a massive challenge.

The former first-class player and current NZ Cricket Players' Association chair has been confirmed as David White's replacement, and while he's determined to ensure players are still enticed by the black cap, he admits it will require huge flexibility.

Weenink's well aware of the enormous challenge he's walking into, but it will take more than love to ensure players stay put.

The lure of lucrative T20 deals has seen several high-profile Blackcaps opt out of their central contracts to cash in overseas.

"Providing that flexibility, so they can top up their earnings at the T20 - maybe at the American league - while still being available for New Zealand as much as possible..." he told Newshub.

NZC board boss Martin Snedden knows Weenink's time as players association chair will be invaluable.

"We are in a battle for the retention of players and therefore we have to ensure that players see real value in staying available for New Zealand for as often as possible," said Snedden.

Said players' association chief executive Heath Mills: "It all comes back to the schedule and the boards of the world control the schedule, so I wish Scott well in his endeavours, as he looks to make an impact in that arena."

Growth in the community game and more test cricket, are also on Weenink's to-do list.

Test skipper Tim Southee agrees.

"You always want more and obviously the three-match series is something we've been working on, but it's up to the future tours and the powers-that-be," he said.

The players have spoken - it's now up to Weenink to deliver.
