How we collect personal information

We collect personal information in a range of ways, including when you:

  • visit this website
  • contact us through our online forms or email us
  • use social media to communicate with us or to view information we post (such as videos and social media posts), and
  • subscribe to our newsletter or updates.

Clickstream data

When visiting this website, a record of your visit is logged. We collect information for statistical purposes and use it to help improve this website, discover what information is most and least accessed, and to make the website more useful. The information we collect when you access our website includes:

  • the user's server address
  • the user's operating system
  • the user's top level domain name (for example .com, .gov)

  • the pages accessed and the documents downloaded
  • the previous site visited

Data analytics and service improvement

Google Analytics does not identify individual users or associate your Internet Protocol (IP) address with any other data held by Google. We use reports provided by Google Analytics to help us understand website traffic and webpage usage.

When you use our website, Google handles your information in the manner described in Google's Privacy Policy. You can opt out of Google Analytics if you disable or refuse the cookie, disable JavaScript, or use the opt-out service provided by Google

We may also use other third party analytics tools (such as Sprinklr) along with Google Analytics for the purpose of improving our communications with you and the public.

  • browser and operating system, for example whether you use Internet Explorer or Chrome, Windows or iOS
  • date and time of website visit
  • pages visited, mouse clicks and documents downloaded from our websites

  • demographics and interests, for example age bracket and gender, along with interests expressed through online behaviour

How we use cookies

Subscription services

When you subscribe to a subscription service on this website, we collect your personal information for the purpose of providing you with the subscription service. 

We use Campaign Monitor to provide services related to your subscription; and we share your personal information with Campaign Monitor for this purpose. We may also use Campaign Monitor’s analytics tools for the purpose of improving our communications with you. Personal information held by Campaign Monitor is handled in accordance with Campaign Monitor's Privacy Policy. Please note, Campaign Monitor’s website and subscription services are provided, supported and hosted on servers in the USA. This means that your personal information may be sent overseas, stored and shared by Campaign Monitor in the USA (including with other countries). In that case, the privacy protection laws of the United Kingdom, European Union and the USA may also apply to your personal information.

If you choose not to provide the personal information we request when you subscribe, we may not be able to provide the subscription service to you. However, you can contact the relevant email listed in the subscription information to access a newsletter or updates in another format, wherever possible.

Social media

We use digital platforms (including X, Facebook, Instagram, Vimeo, YouTube and LinkedIn) to communicate with the public about our work. When you communicate with us using these services we may collect your personal information for the purpose of engaging with and understanding community views.

Digital platforms handle your personal information for their own purposes. These services have their own privacy policies. You can access the privacy policies for these services on their websites.

Our website may also contain links to other websites. We are not responsible for the content and privacy practices of other websites. When you go to other websites from here, we encourage you to read their privacy policies.

Disclosing personal information

We may disclose the personal information we collect through our online channels for a purpose other than the purpose for which it was given to us, where either:

  • you have consented to the disclosure for that purpose, or
  • we’re required or authorised by law to disclosure your information for that purpose. 

We may disclose personal information to overseas recipients when we:

  • publish material on the internet which may contain personal information, such as reports and other documents; photographs, video recordings and audio recordings and posts and comments on our social media platforms
  • use a third party to deliver a service where data is stored on an overseas server, for example, using Campaign Monitor for subscription services, and
  • send a communication to a recipient who is using a service where data is stored on an overseas server, for example, an email account that stores data on an overseas server.

How to make a complaint about your privacy

Our Privacy Policy outlines how to complain about a breach of the Privacy Act by us, and how we will deal with such a complaint.
