Keeping State Highway 6 strong

|

Road crews will return to the Whangamoas later this month to perform essential highway maintenance between the Rai Saddle and Hira.

Contractors will work on the highway for a little over a month - from 15 May to 17 July.

Work will be done during the day from approximately 7 am to 6 pm with single-lane stop-go and temporary speed limits.

Most nights, the road will have both lanes open, but temporary speed limits will remain.

Road crews will build scour protection below slip sites repaired in late 2022. It will slow erosion and further protect the road sections from future damage.

Also on the work programme are drain installation and clearing, pothole and guardrail repairs, rock clearance, and other general maintenance.

The current forestry operations and associated traffic controls on the Whangamoa Hill will pause to minimise disruption.

While drivers can expect some delays because of this maintenance work, they are expected to be short and add only around 10 minutes to travel times.

Waka Kotahi appreciates road works can be inconvenient for drivers. However, State Highway 6 is an essential transport link between Nelson and Marlborough and must be regularly maintained.
